摘要： In a method and a system for the sorting of flat objects, such as letters, by weight, the letters are advanced on a conveyor belt toward two rollers which rotate in their respective directions, and which are driven by a motor, where the angular speed of the rollers is different from the speed of the letters. At the moment when a letter engages the rollers, the drive unit is disconnected, and by measurement of the speeds of the letter and of the rollers before the letter engages the rollers and measurement of the speed of the rollers when the letter engages the rollers, the weight of the letter is determined on the basis of the relation: (I) where I is the moment of inertia of the system, m is the weight of the letter, ω t is the angular speed of the rollers when the letters and the rollers engage, ω to is the angular speed of the rollers before the letters each the rollers, v t is the speed of the letters when they engage the rollers, and v to is the speed of the letters before they reach the rollers. By means of measuring the letters' velocity before and after they reach the rollers and by means of measuring the rollers' velocity before and after the letters come in contact with the rollers, as well as by measuring the power provided to the rollers, it is possible to determine, with great accuracy, the weight of individual letters moving at high velocity, which is a significant advantage when checking as to whether the letters are insufficiently stamped, given that the accuracy also ensures that correctly stamped letters are not identified as being insufficiently stamped.
