    • A stacked drop generator apparatus (20) for ink jet printing includes a stackable housing (22) of electrically nonconductive material having a cavity (24) containing fluid. A pressure wave is produced in the fluid by a device (26) which is deformed in response to electrical pulses. Each cavity (24) is flooded with fluid and has a nozzle (40) integral with the housing. The nozzle has an intake end (41) in the fluid cavity, an exit port (42) through which fluid is expelled from the housing. The cavity of the housing adjacent the nozzle has a tapered shape to concentrate the effect of the pressure wave on the fluid.

    • In the embodiments of the invention described in the specification, a four-color ink jet printer includes a transport mechanism for conveying a record medium in one direction and an ink jet head containing a black ink nozzle array (26) and a primary color ink nozzle array (29, 30, 31) for scanning the record medium in a transverse direction while projecting drops of ink onto the record medium. A control unit provides two printing speeds in which either high-quality or high-speed printing can be accomplished. For high-speed printing all of the nozzles of both arrays (26 and 29, 30, 31) are used, and for high-quality printing one-third (32) of the nozzles in the black ink array and all of the nozzles in the primary color ink nozzle array (29, 30, 31) are used and the record medium is transported at one-third the rate used for high-speed printing. In certain embodiments, the two arrays of nozzles (26 and 29, 30, 31) are disposed at different angles with respect to the scanning motion of the ink jet head so that the nozzles of the primary color array (29, 30, 31) are spaced in the direction of motion of the record medium by a greater distance than the nozzles of the black ink array (26). In other embodiments, the arrays are disposed at the same angle with respect to the scanning motion and the nozzles for the three primary colors may be alternated in the color nozzle array.

    • An ink jet recorder of the continuous jet type has a mounting block (3) defining a reference surface. Nozzle units (1a-1d) from which the ink stream (5a-5d) are ejected are releasably keyed to the reference surface. An ink reservoir supplies electrically conductive ink to the nozzle units which selectively charge segments of the ink streams issuing from the nozzle units. Each unit also includes provision (91, 93) for accurately aiming the ink stream in both the x and y directions using simple knob controls. A deflection unit (7) is also releasably keyed to the reference surface downstream from the nozzle units. The ink stream is directed through a deflecting unit (7) mounted on the reference surface. Mating members (140, 141, 144) (146, 148, 150) are provided in said mounting block (3) which corresponds with mating members on the deflection unit. This unit generates an electrical field which deflects the selectively charged segments of the ink stream issuing from the nozzle unit, from their predetermined paths so that they do not reach the recording medium; the undeflected portions of the ink streams form the printing on the medium. The deflection unit also includes provision for removing extraneous ink from the regions of the deflection field so as to minimize background coloration in the printing on the medium. A charged mist shield (126) is provided in said deflection unit to further attract extraneous ink in and about said deflection unit. Vacuum means (13) are provided to withdraw extraneous ink from said deflection unit, nozzle unit, and mist shield.

    • Apparatus and method for ink jet printing in which ink (14) circulated in a continuous moving stream in a closed capillary tube (10) is caused to be deflected at a point inside the circulating ink system by deflecting means (18) arranged to produce pressure pulses to effect a printing operation by deflecting ink from the stream towards a nozzle (20). The deflected ink is ejected through the nozzle (20) in the form of droplets. The velocity (V u) of the ejected droplets depends upon the velocity of the continuously-flowing ink (V u) and on the velocity of the deflection pulse (V u).

    • The control of ink jet printing must deal with rapid starting and stopping of the ink fluid to provide for both correct and high speed printing. Ink droplet ejection is controlled by means of cylindrically-shaped pressure waves generated in the ink close to the nozzle (18). A pair of electrodes (10, 12) is provided in the ink chamber (14) with an insulated conductor (22) extending therebetween and the pressure waves are generated as a result of interaction between discharges between electrodes and the magnetic field produced around the conductor (22) as current flows therethrough, The principal use is an ink jet printer.

    • Ink jet printer (10) having a rotatable ink reservoir (12) for supplying ink to a print head (52) through a capillary ink supply line (48), which print head (52) is movable in rotary direction and is adapted to eject ink droplets on to a record medium (72) as the head (52) is moved past the record medium (72). The ink reservoir (12) has two cavities (28, 30), one of which (30) is connected to the print head (52) by the ink supply line (48). Valve means (36, 40, 42) are provided between the cavities (28, 30) to control the flow of ink therebetween such that ink is free to flow between the cavities (28, 30) when the ink reservoir (12) is at rest, but is prevented from flowing, due to centrifugal force, upon rotation of the ink reservoir (12). By virtue of this arrangement a major proportion of the total ink in the reservoir (12) is isolated from the ink supply line (48) during rotation of the reservoir (12), whereby a sufficient negative head is maintained at said print head (52) for proper operation of the printer (10).

    • An ink flow control means for regulating the supply of ink from an ink reservoir (24) to a bi-directionally movable print head (12) of an ink jet printer. The control means deals with the problem of rapid starting and stopping of the ink to minimize fluctuations thereof during print head (12) reversal in direction of movement. An ink flow control valve (30) interposed in the ink supply line (28, 32) is arranged to close by reason of inertial forces on the valve (30) when the print head (12) is decelerated and accelerated near the two ends of its travel.

    • A novel "strip mode" printing method is disclosed for printing in the following technologies: electrostatic, electrographic (laser, LED), impact wire type or pin-dot matrix, ink jet and solid ink jet. Data representing the image (26) to be printed is arranged in a plurality of X-axis strips (34-38) each having an Y-axis width substantially less than the width of the medium (27) to be printed on. The strip mode print head (28) is moved to an X-axis strip, then the medium (27) is moved to print in the strip. The strip mode print head (28) remains stationary while the medium (27) is moved to print an entire strip. The strip mode printing head (28) is next moved to print in another strip and held stationary while that strip is printed. The image is preferably printed strip-by-strip, rather than full-width-line by full-width-line as in line mode and serial mode printers.
