    • An energy absorber for interposing between two members to absorb energy of motion which may be induced between the two comprises a core (3) of a plastically deformable energy absorbing material such as lead and means surrounding the core such as layers of steel plates (2) and rubber (1) in a sandwich-like structure. The end plates (4) are formed with holes (5), into which the ends of the core (3) project. During construction, the support structure (1, 2) is stretched, allowing end caps (6) to be fitted. The support structure (1, 2) is then relaxed, which applies approximately hydrostatic pressure to the core (3). Induced motion is transferred as shear forces across the core (3). The hydrostatic pressure applied to the core (3) preferably exceeds the shear yield stress of the energy absorbing material of the core (3).

    • An energy absorber is described which in its simplest embodiment is a pair of shear dampers mounted back to back on a common axis. Each shear damper has a central core of damping material, such as lead, confined by a laminated structure of rigid plates, preferably separated by resilient material. The cores and surrounding laminates are compressed between a pair of distal end plates and an end plate common to both dampers. The common end plate may be attached to one structural member and the distal end plates to another structural member to dampen relative motion between them. The absorber can dampen many kinds of motions caused by forces ranging from wind to earthquakes to vibrations in general such as vibrations in heavy machinery, rolling stock or penstocks.

    • The invention relates to a device for damping mechanical vibrations of heavy sound sources, said vibrations being sonic frequencies propagated in undesirable directions. The sound sources are placed onto the floor covering using legs and/or underlays which are arranged in the lower parts of said sound waves. The invention is characterised in that at least one layer (4) which is produced by a non-elastic material that badly conducts sound, preferably lead and at least one polyurethane layer (5), are placed between the lower parts of the sound sources and the floor covering. The polyurethane layer (5) is suitable for sound damping and is provided with a cell structure consisting of cells that are partly or entirely open. The layers are arranged in such a way that the layer (4) consisting of the non-elastic material is always closer to the sound source and that the various layers (4, 5) are arranged alternately when there are more than two layers (4, 5).
