    • The disclosure concerns an assembly for vibrating a compacting drum of a compacting machine. The assembly (30) comprising a shaft (26) rotatably mountable to a compacting drum (4, 5) of the compacting machine (1). The centre of mass of the shaft (26) being offset from the geometrical rotation axis of the shaft (26). An outer eccentric member (40) is arranged outside of the shaft (26), wherein the centre of mass of the outer eccentric member (40) is offset from the geometrical rotation axis of the shaft (26). The outer eccentric member (40) is displaceably mounted relative to the shaft (26) for adjustment of the eccentricity of the assembly. An extension of the outer eccentric member (40) in a direction parallel with the geometrical rotation axis of the shaft (26) is at least two times an average extension of the outer eccentric member (40) in a radial direction perpendicular to the geometrical rotation axis of shaft (26) such that a mass of the outer eccentric member (40) forms a distributed load along the geometrical rotation axis of the shaft (26).

    • The invention concerns a device where creation of mechanical vibration is made with a system (1) of two or more rotating eccentrics (10). Each eccentric (10) is rotated by an individually controlled motor (11) and the angle position of each eccentric (10) is read by an angle sensor (12). With a control and monitoring system (5), the rotation frequency, direction of rotation and phase position of each eccentric (10) can be controlled. By choosing a number of eccentrics, mass of the eccentrics, rotation frequency, direction of rotation and phase position, a force vector diagram of suitable form, in space and time, can be generated. The invention is intended primarily for use in appliances for dynamic compaction of various materials.

    • The drum of a vibratory compactor is normally resiliently rotatably mounted on a frame and has an eccentric shaft mounted therein by a pair of longitudinally bearing assemblies. The outer races of the bearing assemblies must be precisely mounted in bores defined in carriers secured on the drum and the bores must be precisely aligned to insure the co-incident relationship of the rotational axes of the drum and the shaft. In addition to the potential misalignment problem and manufacturing costs, the bearing assemblies must be preloaded towards each other and the load-carrying to size ratio of the bearing assemblies is normally relatively low. The above prior art problems are avoided by a self-aligning arrangement (28) of this invention which functions to mount a pair of longitudinally spaced bearing assemblies (23) on an eccentric mounting shaft (20) for permitting limited relative movement between the shaft (20) and a drum (11) to place the longitudinal axes (A, A') of the drum (11) and the shaft (20) in co-incident relationship relative to each other.
