    • Novel anhydrous hydraulic fluid composition comprising: (a) from 65 to 100 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the anhydrous hydraulic fluid composition, of an alkoxylate compound having the following formula (I), wherein R and R 5 are each hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 are each hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, or OR 6 group, or CH 2 .-O-R 6 ; R 6 is hydrogen, or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and n is an integer from 1 to 4; (b) from 1 to 35 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the anhydrous hydraulic fluid composition, of a thickener; and, optionally, (c) from 0 to 10 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the anhydrous hydraulic fluid composition, of at least one additive selected from the group consisting of lubricity additives, corrosion inhibitors, metal passivators, antioxidants, anti-foam additives, dyes, perfumes and detergents. The novel anhydrous hydraulic fluid compositions not only provide superior fire resistant and high pressure properties, but can also provide superior lubrication. Many of these novel anhydrous hydraulic fluids can also be used in applications where environmentally friendliness is required because of their water solubility, rapid biodegradability, and low aquatic toxicity.
