    • A process utilizing a micro-emulsion is described. The micro-emulsion is formed by contacting an ionic liquid, a co-solvent, a hydrocarbon, an optional surfactant, and an optional catalyst promoter. The micro-emulsion comprises a hydrocarbon component comprising the hydrocarbon, and an ionic liquid component comprising the ionic liquid. The ionic liquid comprises a halometallate anion and a cation. The hydrocarbon comprises at least one paraffin having from 4 to about 50 carbon atoms. The co-solvent has a polarity greater than the polarity of the hydrocarbon. The ionic liquid is present in an amount of about 0.05 wt% to about 40 wt% of the micro-emulsion. A product mixture comprising a product is produced in a process zone containing the micro-emulsion. The product comprises at least one of an isomerized paraffin, a disproprtionated paraffin, and a reverse disproportionated paraffin.

    • The present invention relates to a process for preparing a base oil fraction having a reduced cloud point from a hydrocarbon feed which is derived from a Fischer-Tropsch process, the process comprises the steps of: (a) providing a hydrocarbon feed which is derived from a Fischer-Tropsch process; (b) subjecting the hydrocarbon feed of step (a) to a catalytic dewaxing treatment to obtain an at least partially isomerised product; (c) separating at least part of the at least partially isomerised product as obtained in step (b) into one or more light hydrocarbon fractions and one or more heavy base oil fractions; (d) separating at least one of the heavy base oil fractions as obtained in step (c) by means of a first membrane into a first permeate which comprises a base oil having a reduced cloud point and a first retentate which comprises a base oil containing haze compounds, wherein the membrane separation is carried out at a temperature in the range of from the pour point of the base oil and up to 120°C and a pressure in the range of from 5-60 bar; and (e) separating at least part of the first permeate as obtained in step (d) by means of a second membrane into a second permeate which comprises a base oil having a further reduced cloud point and a second retentate which comprises a base oil containing haze compounds, wherein the membrane separation is carried out at a temperature in the range of from the pour point of the base oil and up to 120°C and a pressure in the range of from 5-60 bar; and (f) recovering the second permeate as obtained in step (e).

    • Methods are provided for producing Group II and Group III base stocks with a controlled or consistent aromatics content. An aromatics-rich base stock, such as a Group I base stock or an alkylated aromatic base stock, can be added to the catalytically treated base stock in a minimal amount after the final catalytic treatment step but prior to fractionation. At the beginning of a processing run for forming lubricant base stock products, about 0.25 wt% to about 1.25 wt% of the Group I base stock can be added to a catalytically processed feed after the final catalytic processing stage but prior to fractionation to form the Group II and/or Group III base stock. During the course of the processing run, the amount of Group I base stock added can be reduced roughly in correspondence with the increase in aromatics caused by catalyst deactivation. This can allow a catalytically processed lubricant base stock product to be generated that contains at least about a threshold (minimum) aromatics content during the course of a processing run. Alternatively, this can allow a catalytically processed lubricant base stock product to be generated that has consistent aromatics content during the course of the processing run.
