    • This invention relates to acerium-zirconium based mixed oxide having:(a) a Ce:Zr molar ratio of 1 or less, and(b)a cerium oxide content of 10-50% by weight,wherein the composition has (i) a surface area of at least 18m 2 /g, and a total pore volume as measured by N 2 physisorption of at least 0.11cm 3 /g, after ageing at 1100°C in an air atmosphere for 6hours, and(ii) a surface area of at least 42m 2 /g, anda total pore volume as measured by N 2 physisorption of at least 0.31cm 3 /g, after ageing at 1000°C in an air atmosphere for 4 hours. The invention also relates to acatalytic system comprising the cerium-zirconium based mixed oxide, as well astoaprocess 10 for treating an exhaust gas from a vehicle engine comprising contacting the exhaust gas with the cerium-zirconium based mixed oxide. In addition, the invention relates to a process for preparing a cerium-zirconium based mixed hydroxide or mixed oxide as claimed in any preceding claim, the process comprising the steps of:(a) dissolving a zirconium salt in an aqueous acid, (b)adding one or more complexing agents to the resulting solution, the one or more complexing agents being an organic compound comprising at least one of the following functional groups: an amine, an organosulphate,a sulphonate, a hydroxyl, an etheror a carboxylic acid group,(c) heating the solution or sol formed in step (b),(d) adding a cerium salt, and adding a sulphating agent either before or after the addition of the cerium salt,and(e) adding a base to form a cerium-zirconium based mixed hydroxide.

    • A process for the preparation of a composition comprising A1-, Ce- and Zr-oxides, which process comprises the steps of (a) preparing an aqueous solution of a mixture of metal salts of cerium, zirconium and aluminium, wich aqueous solution optionally comprises one or more salts of the Rare Earth Metals other than cerium, (b) adding to the solution obtained a baseat temperatures from 0°C to 95°C and precipitating the mixed metal salts in the form of hydroxides or oxy-hydroxides, (d) treating the aqueous suspension obtained in step (b) with a surfactant, and (e) isolating the precipitate obtained in step (d) and treating said precipitate at a temperature from 450°C to 1200°C, which process is characterized in that the alumina content is in the range from 35 to 80% by weight, and the surface area (BET) of the composition obtained, measured according to DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm) 66131 after calcining for 2 hours at 1100°C is from 55 to 80 m 2 /g; or is at least 35 m 2 /g after calcining for 20 hours at 1100°C; and a composition comprising A1-, Ce- and Zr-oxides, characterized in that the aluminium content, calculated as aluminium oxide is in the range from 35 to 80% by weight, and the surface area (BET) of the composition measured according to DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm) 66131 for 2 hours at 1100°C is from 55 to 80 m 2 /g, and/or is at least 35 m 2 /g after calcining for 20 hours at 1100°C obtainable or obtained according such process.
