    • A method for producing a surface - functionalised object involves: (i)providing negative mould (2) with a surface topography complementary to that desired on the object; (ii) applying a functional entity (20) to the mould surface, in an exciting medium; (iii) forming the object (21) in or on the mould (2), the object being in direct contact, as it forms, with the functional entity (20); and (iv) releasing the object (21) from the mould, wherein during steps (iii) and/or (iv), at least some (22) of the functional entity (20) is transferred from the mould to the object, whilst a proportion remains on the mould (2) surface. The method can be used to functionalise the surface of an object as it is cast, and the mould can be re-used to form multiple replicate objects. The invention also provides an object producedusing the method, and a surface - functionalised negative mould for use in the method.

    • A method, system and apparatus for manufacturing anatomically and functionally accurate soft tissue phantoms with multimodality characteristics for imaging studies is disclosed. The organ/tissue phantom is constructed by filling a container containing an organ having inner vasculature therein with a molten elastomeric material; inserting a plurality of rods with bumps thereupon through the container and the organ; allowing the molten elastomeric material to harden and cure; removing the organ; replacing the organ with a plurality of elastomeric segments; and removing an elastomeric segment and replacing the void created thereupon with molten PVA to create a PVA segment; allowing the molten PVA segment to harden and cure; and repeating the creation of PVA segments until all the elastomeric segments have been removed, such that each successive molten PVA segment adheres to and fuses with the previous hardened PVA segment so as to form an approximately complete organ phantom cast. The organ/tissue phantom is completed by inserting the approximately complete organ phantom cast inserting upside-down into a fixture made from the bottom-most elastomeric segment, which contains molten PVA; and allowing the molten PVA to harden and cure.

    • A method of making functional orthotics from a multiplicity of uniquely designed injection molds which have been constructed by studying large numbers of replicas produced from uncorrected replicas that replicate the contour of the feet of a multiplicity of patients. In one form of the method of the invention, following a careful dimensional study of the corrected replicas, they are grouped into families, the members of which exhibit lower surface contours that are substantially identical. An injection mold is then made for each of the identified families, in a manner such that the mold will produce an orthotic having an upper surface that corresponds to the lower surface of the corrected orthotic that makes up the group. Companion data is then developed which correlates the corrected replicas of each identified family with the uncorrected replicas from which they were made. A study of the uncorrected replicas then provides data as to the contour of the patient's feet which they replicate. This data can then be compared with new patient data provided by the prescribing doctor and the mold can be selected which will produce an injection molded orthotic which is appropriate for the particular patient.
