    • A size press apparatus is disclosed for coating at least one surface of a web with a coating material. The size press apparatus includes a first roll for rotation about a first rotational axis, the first roll defining a first peripheral surface which is disposed spaced and parallel relative to the first rotational axis. A second roll is provided for rotation about a second rotational axis, the second roll defining a second peripheral surface which is disposed spaced and parallel relative to the second rotational axis. The first peripheral surface of the first roll cooperates with the second peripheral surface of the second roll for defining therebetween a nip for the passage therethrough of the web, the nip having a first nip line which extends between the first and second rotational axes of the first and second rolls respectively. A moving device moves the second rotational axis of the second roll. The moving device moves the second rotational axis from a first location thereof in which the nip is disposed on the first nip line to a second location of the second rotational axis in which the nip is defined between the first and second peripheral surfaces, the nip having a second nip line when in the second location thereof, the second nip line extending between the first and second axes of the first and second rolls respectively such that the first and second nip lines define therebetween a nip angle so that a variable nip angle is generated by the moving device when moving the second rotational axis of the second roll between the first and second locations thereof. The arrangement is such that a trajectory of the web exiting the nip remains relatively constant when moving the second rotational axis of the second roll between the first and second locations thereof.

    • A coated glass gnat comprises a glass mat substrate having non-woven glass fibers and a coating which essentially uniformly penetrates the glass mat substrate to desired fractional thickness of the coated glass mat. The coating imparts a tensile strength to the coated glass mat which on average is at least 1.33 times greater than the tensile strength of the glass mat substrate without the coating. In example embodiments, penetration of the coating into the glass mat substrate preferably extends to a depth of from twenty five percent of a thickness of the coated glass mat to seventy five percent of the thickness of the coated glass mat. Moreover, a non-coated thickness of the coated glass mat is sufficiently thick for bonding purposes with, e.g., a gypsum slurry or other core materials such as thermoplastic or thermosetting plastics. The coating has a porosity in a range of from 1.3 CFM to 5.0 CFM, e.g., the coating comprises a coating blend which provides the coated glass mat with a porosity sufficient to allow water vapor to escape from a gypsum slurry when heated. The coating is preferably a coating blend comprised of water, latex binder, inorganic pigment, and inorganic binder.
