    • A biomedical apparatus for pumping blood of a human or an animal patient through a secondary blood circuit (10, 11, 12) is provided, comprising a blood pump (10), an inlet duct (11) and an outlet duct (12) for guiding blood of the patient to the blood pump (10) and back to the patient. The apparatus further comprises a measuring device (14) with at least one pressure sensor (40-46) for measuring pressure values in the patient's circulatory system. A controller (13) is provided that comprises at least two different preset control algorithms for regulating the operating point of the blood pump (10) based on the measured pressure values. The controller (13) is configured to select one of these preset control algorithms for being applied in dependence on the position of the at least one pressure sensor (40-46) in the patient's circulatory system.

    • A blood pump is provided which comprises a cross-flow pump head having an elongated generally cylindrical housing portion. The housing portion defines a blood inlet port on a surface thereof and a blood outlet port on an opposite surface thereof. An impeller within the housing portion provides cross-flow of the blood from the inlet port around and/or across the rotational axis of the impeller to the outlet, and a motor is provided for driving the cross-flow pump head. The blood pump may be small enough to permit percutaneous insertion of the pump into a patient's blood vessel, and thus may be utilizable as a left ventricular assist device. To this end, a collapsible polymeric outlow tube is coupled to the bood flow outlet and is adapted for directing the blood from the left ventricle to the aorta through the aortic valve.

    • An auxiliary mechanical heart (10) consisting of a blood tube (14) by which the blood ejected from the heart ventricle is fed into the auxiliary mechanical heart; a one-way valve (22) provided in the blood tube which opens exclusively toward the auxiliary mechanical heart side; an afterload regulatory chamber (11) in which the blood ejected from the heart ventricle is tentatively pooled; a pressure sensor (23) by which the pressure in the afterload regulatory chamber (11) is detected; a blood pump (25); a driving controller (26) for the pump; a blood tube (16) for the arterial blood; and a probe (27) and a blood flow meter (28) for measuring the blood flow rate of the blood pump (25). The pressure in the afterload regulatory chamber (11) is controlled so that the one-way valve (22) is closed in the ventricular diastolic phase while, in the ventricular systolic phase, the whole blood ejected from the heart ventricle flows toward the afterload regulatory chamber (11). Thus, this novel auxiliary mechanical heart is elaborated so that the self-heart can eject the blood at a low ejection resistance and effect sufficient dilation and contraction.
