    • A patient-specific implant, based on a bottom-up approach, to treat patients with bone defects is described. The defect bone is reconstructed. In the configuration step, parameters that influence fixation of the implant are calculated. Specifications of the surgeon may be incorporated to steer the implant configurations. Different configuration proposals are calculated with different values for a first number of parameters. Via the evaluation step, different implant geometries are numerically simulated to determine the biomechanical impact and strength of the implant. A suitable implant design is chosen if it meets certain quality criteria. If the implant design fails to meet the quality criteria, the number of parameters calculated for creating different configuration proposals is iteratively increased in an optimization process, and evaluation is repeated to find a suitable implant design. This optimization process continues until an implant configuration is found that complies with implant quality criterions and the surgeon's specifications.
