摘要： A method for operating a fuel cell having a membrane electrode assembly including an anode, a cathode, and a membrane between the anode and the cathode, the method including the steps of : feeding fuel to the anode at a fuel pressure; feeding oxidant to the cathode at an oxidant pressure, wherein the feeding steps create a transition plane between the fuel and the oxidant; and selectively maintaining the fuel pressure higher than the oxidant pressure sufficient to position the transition plane in the cathode or within 5% thickness of the membrane of the cathode. A protective layer can be included in the assembly, and the pressure can be manipulated to position a transition jplane (Xo) within the protective layer.

摘要： A membrane electrode assembly is provided which includes an anode,- a cathode; a membrane between the anode and the cathode; and a protective layer between the membrane and at least one electrode of the anode and the cathode, the protective layer having a layer of ionomer material containing a catalyst, the layer having a porosity of between 0 and 10%, an ionomer content of between 50 and 80% vol., a catalyst content of between 10 and 50% vol., and an electrical connectivity between catalyst particles of between 35 and 75%. A configuration using a precipitation layer to prevent migration of catalyst ions is also provided.

摘要： A method for making a membrane electrode assembly includes the steps of providing a membrane electrode assembly including an anode including a hydrogen oxidation catalyst; a cathode; a membrane disposed between the anode and the cathode; and depositing a peroxide decomposition catalyst in at least one position selected from the group consisting of the anode, the cathode, a layer between the anode and the membrane and a layer between the cathode and the membrane wherein the peroxide decomposition catalyst has selectivity when exposed to hydrogen peroxide toward reactions which form benign products from the hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide decomposition catalyst can also be positioned within the membrane. Also disclosed is a power-generating fuel cell system including such a membrane electrode assembly, and a process for operating such a fuel cell system.

摘要： A fuel cell stack 10 includes at least one fuel cell 12 having a fuel inlet 22 for directing a hydrogen fuel to the fuel cell 12 to generate electric current; a sensor cell 14 having an anode 30, a cathode 32 and a membrane 34 between the anode 30 and the cathode 32, the anode 30 being communicated with the fuel inlet 22 to receive a portion of fuel from the fuel inlet 22, the sensor cell 14 being connected across the stack to carry the electric current whereby hydrogen from the portion of fuel is electrochemically pumped to the cathode 32 of the sensor cell 14; and a sensor 44 communicated with the sensor cell 14 to receive a signal corresponding to evolution of hydrogen from the anode 30 to the cathode 32 of the sensor cell 14 and adapted to detect contaminants in the fuel based upon the signal.

摘要： A method of manufacturing a plate for a fuel cell includes the steps of providing flow channels in a fuel cell plate. Multiple fuel cell plates are joined into a cell stack assembly. A blocking plate is affixed to the fuel cell plate and at least partially obstructs the flow channels. The blocking plate is affixed to the fuel cell plate after the plates have been arranged into the cell stack assembly. The resulting fuel cell provides a fuel cell plate having a perimeter with an edge. The fuel cell plate includes flow channels extending to the edge. The blocking plate is affixed to the fuel cell plate at the edge to at least partially block the flow channel. In this manner, an inexpensive fuel cell plate may be used, and the blocking plate can be configured to create terminated flow channels, which may be used to provide an interdigitated flow field.

摘要： Fuel cell reactant flow field plates (22, 32) are formed by extruding long sections (17, 25) of carbonaceous material, either with straight grooves (18, 28) formed by the extrusion die, or by end milling or arbor milling, and then cut to a proper size, including cuts in which the edges of the plates are at an angle with respect to the grooves. Cooler plates are formed of water- permeable material (39) in which hydrophobic material (40) is impregnated so as to define coolant channels (42-44) with inlets and outlets (47, 49). A two- layer cooler plate is formed by stamping voids in one layer (51) that define coolant flow channels (52) with inlets (54) and outlets (56) while a second layer (59) is stamped with voids (61, 62) that define coolant inlet and exit headers; juxtaposition of the layers, with or without bonding, form the cooler plate. A cooler plate (65) is made by corrugating thin metal sheet, providing coolant channels (68) for cathodes and coolant channels (73) for anodes when interposed therebetween.

摘要： A fuel cell stack (31) includes a plurality of fuel cells (9) each having an electrolyte such as a PEM (10), anode and cathode catalyst layers (13, 14), anode and cathode gas diffusion layers (16, 17), and water transport plates (21, 28) adjacent the gas diffusion layers. The cathode diffusion layer of cells near the cathode end (36) of the stack have a high water permeability, such as greater than 3x10 -4 g/(Pa s m) at about 80°C and about 1 atmosphere, whereas the cathode gas diffusion layer in cells near the anode end (35) have water vapor permeance greater than 3x10 -4 g/(Pa s m) at about 80°C and about 1 atmosphere. In one embodiment, the anode gas diffusion layer of cells near the anode end (35) of the stack have a higher liquid water permeability than the anode gas diffusion layer in cells near the cathode end; a second embodiment reverses that relationship.
