    • Aspects of this invention relate to the fields of molecular biology and medicine. More specifically, disclosed herein are methods for diagnosing, treating, and monitoring subjects with HPV-infected and/or cancer cells. Embodiments disclosed herein relate to methods of reducing the presence of cancer cells (e.g. a tumor by contacting these cells with a miR-34a nucleic acid where it is internalized and subsequently targets cell-cycle regulatory genes such as pl8Ink4c, CDK4, and cyclin E). More embodiments relate to methods of restoring apoptosis in cancer cells. Additional embodiments relate to methods of increasing the amount of a miR-34a nucleic acid in cancer cells. Still more embodiments relate to methods of reducing the presence of pl 8Ink4c in a HPV-infected cell and methods of monitoring the amount of mi-R34a in a subject.
