    • A mass selector is disclosed for separating particles in a particle beam according to mass. The selector has a pair of first electrodes (12, 14) defining an elongate first path (16) for the passage of a focused particle beam. A pair of second electrodes (24, 26) are spaced from the pair of first electrodes (12, 14) and define an elongate second path (28) for separated particles. The first and second paths (16, 28) are mutually parallel. A first voltage pulse is applied across the first electrodes (12, 14) so that the particles in a portion of the beam which is in the first path (16) are accelerated transversely of their direction of movement along said first path toward said second path. A second voltage pulse is applied across the second electrodes (24, 26) so that particles which have been accelerated by said first voltage pulse and which have entered said second path (28) are decelerated transversely of their direction of movement along said second path.

    • The invention relates to a method for non-invasively measuring skin structure. Infrared radiation from a plurality of locations over an area of skin under investigation is measured so as to give an indication of the variation in papillary dermis thickness over said area, and the skin colour coordinates at a plurality of locations over the same area of skin is also measured. The data obtained is used to calculate corrected skin colour coordinates over the area corresponding to a predetermined papillary dermis thickness. The corrected skin colour coordinates so obtained are compared with a reference colour coordinate range for healthy skin of the same predetermined papillary dermis thickness. At an abnormal region, where the corrected skin colour coordinates lie outside the reference colour coordinate range, the depth of penetration of dermal melanin can be measured.

    • A measurement apparatus is provided in which an oscillator (8) provides a drive signal to a phase sensitive detector (12) and to a transducer (2) including a reactive component (4) whose impedance is a function of a physical quantity which is to be measured. The reactive component (4) causes the drive signal to become shifted in phase as a function of the physical quantity. This signal is output from the transducer as a measurement signal. The phase sensitive detector provides an output signal which is indicative of the phase shift caused by the transducer and the output signal is used in a feedback network to adjust the frequency of the oscillator so as to maintain a predetermined phase difference between the drive signal and the measurement signal.

    • A highway pavement has a multi-layer structure (20) interposed between the subbase (24) and the subgrade (22). The multi-layer structure is also suitable for use in railway pavements.
