    • A vehicle steering column adjustment and energy absorbing mechanism includes a steering column tube (1) slidably mounted in a support member (2). A toothed slipper (8) releasably engages with a toothed rack (3) on the tube (1) to lock the steering column relatively to the support member (2), a cam (7) being provided to provide the locking action. The energy absorbing mechanism is provided by a strap (11) which is rigidly joined to the slipper (8) and is bent over a pin (12) so that, in the event of vehicle crash with the rack and slipper locked together, energy imparted to the steering column causes the outer tube (1) to move to cause the locking means to draw the strap (11) around the pin, thereby to absorb energy.

    • A collapsible steering column assembly with means to absorb energy transmitted by the steering column upon collapse, including a deformable U-shaped wire clip (7) engaged around a pair of pins (10). A skid member (9) adjoins the clip (7) and is coupled to the steering column so that, upon collapse of the steering column, the skid member is urged in a direction to deform the wire clip by drawing it over the pins (10). The clip and skid member are accommodated in a fixed mounting bracket (8) for the steering column. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 5, 6), the pins (10A) are secured to a mouveable plate (12) so that the plate moves upon vehicle impact to straighten the two wires (7A) around the pins, one end (15) of each wire being secured in a fixed plate (14).

    • A shaft coupling, especially for coupling upper and lower shafts (23, 22) of a vehicle steering column, comprises two yokes (1, 2) interconnected through respective cross members (4A, 4B) by a pivotable elbow member (3), having two limbs (3A, 3B) pivoted together. The outer end of each limb (3A, 3B) is coupled to a respective one of the cross members (4A, 4B) and the pivot axes (7A, 7B) of the elbow member (3) and the cross members (4A, 4B) mounted on the elbow member (3) are parallel to one another. The coupling is suitable for a steering column which is rake and/or reach adjustable and allows, upon impact in a crash situation collapse of the coupling so one limb contacts the other in order to transmit collapse effort through the coupling.
