    • To provide a can-lid with pop-out-spout, a folded, plastic spout (30) is secured on the underside of a metal can-lid, which is conventionally roll-seamed onto the can-body. This is achieved either by gluing, or by plastic-coating the underside of the lid and heat-sealing the spout to the lid, or by incorporating the tips of the spout's flange in the roll-seamed joint of the can-lid, or other appropriate means. When the can is opened, the spout is released and either unfolds automatically due to the beverage's pressure (in case of carbonated beverages), or can be pulled out by the user. The spout is provided either with a screw-closure (31), or with a twist-off, flick-open closure (41). In one version, the spout is completely covered by the can-lid, which is provided by an opening feature which enables an opening large enough for the spout to pass out. In a further version, the can-lid has a pre-cut aperture, behind which the closure on the spout is locked until the user opens by twisting the closure to free it from aperture. Pilfer-evidence is provided by the can-lid itself, where this has no pre-cut aperture, or by making the handles of the closure pilfer-evident when bent out, or by applying a label (56) across the pre-cut aperture.

    • A vending machine for packaged beverages includes a housing defining a storage compartment for the packaged beverages to be discharged through a port in the face of the vending machine, a sign panel disposed across the face of the vending machine including a translucent backlighted panel, and a convex three-dimensional portion of a container secured to an outside surface of the translucent panel, the three-dimensional portion including high resolution graphics which evolve from distorted graphics on a flat sheet of material which was transformed into the three-dimensional portion. A method for distorting the graphics which appear on the final three-dimensional shape includes the step of developing distortion pattern data from an undistorted grid on a plastic sheet which is formed on a mold into the same convex three-dimensional shape of the sign panel to appear on the front of the vending machine. The resulting distortion in the grid is analyzed to generate the distortion pattern data, and this distortion pattern data is utilized to provide distorted graphics to a flat plastic sheet which is formed into the final convex three-dimensional shape of the sign panel on the face of the vending machine.

    • A system and method are provided for minimizing the effects of background signals in masking signals indicating the presence of substances to be detected such as contaminants in materials moving rapidly along a conveyor. The contaminants detected may include nitrogen containing compounds and hydrocarbons. The system and method of the present invention minimize during detection of the presence or absence of such substances, the number of falsely positive indications of the presence of such substances due to background signals and changes in background signals. The substances detected are divided into first and second sample portions and the respective portions are heated. The first heated portion is mixed with ozone to cause a chemical action therewith in order to generate radiation by chemiluminescence having characteristic weavelengths related to substances in the first portion. The second portion heated is also mixed with ozone to cause a chemical reaction therewith in order to generate radiation by chemiluminescence having characteristic wavelengths related to substances in the second portion. The radiation of the respective first and second portions is selectively detected. The heating and detecting steps are performed in a manner so as to yield a higher level of detected radiation from one of the portions of the sample than the other for at least some of the selected compounds being detected. Electrical signals from the respective first and second portions are generated and compared in order to determine the presence or absence of selected compounds in the sample. Appropriate reject signals for a bottle sorting system are generated accordingly.
