    • Gaskets (1) suitable for high temperature use and having applicability for sealing oven doors are provided. The gaskets (1) are interbraided from a wire (3) such as stainless steel and a thermally insulating yarn (2) formed, for example, from spun glass fibres. Continuous wireforms (10) having spaced apart protrusions (11) are retained in place within the openings formed by the wires (3) and provide for attachment of the gaskets (1) to apertures (15) in a surface (16). The gaskets (1) are manufactured on a circular braider with approximately 1/3 of the carriers being loaded with wires (3) and 2/3 of the carriers being loaded with glass fibre yarn (2). The gaskets (1) are characterised by an absence of an inner resilient support structure. Gaskets (1) of the so-called "tadpole" type comprised of interbraided glass fibre yarn (2) and wire (3) are also disclosed.

    • A braided sleeve (10) is comprised of a first material in monofilament form (11) characterised in that it has high modulus of elasticity and is capable of taking a resilient set. The first material is interbraided with a second material in filamentary form (12) which is chosen to impart a property to the sleeve according to its intended end use. The sleeve is further processed to introduce a series of resiliently set radially projecting according folds or pleats (14) which extend in a series lengthwise of the product and may be in groups with intervening spaces in which no corrugations are formed. The braid allows for radial expansion and contraction so that is resiliently conforms to the shape of an elongated substrate which may have irregularities in its cross section and further allows for appreciable axial elongation and expansion so as to protect a substrate having the property of axial extension and contraction.

    • A damping arrangement (20) (Figure 1(b)) for radial vibrations in a turbomachine shaft (10) comprises two circumferentially limited, diametrically opposed damping chambers (22, 23) open towards the shaft and to which gas is supplied alternately by gas flow controllers (29A and 29B). Each controller contains fluidic devices switched by sensing pressures in the circumferentially displaced chambers (22', 23'), or even the same chambers, as such pressure are modulated by the variations in shaft position, to divert the gas from source (27). The diversion of gas flow is arranged to cause pressure fluctuations, which exert radial thrust on the shaft, advanced in phase to approach of the shaft so as to damp the vibration. The fluidic devices may be implemented by flow amplifiers or fluid logic flip flop (41) (Figure 2) and may be multistage devices to increase gain, all of which may be formed without moving parts and embedded in the housing. Flow diversion may be effected by other forms of sensing, such as leakage from a nozzle facing the shaft. The arrangement may be combined with, or serve as, a gas seal or be part of a bearing arrangement.

    • The invention relates to a brake pad (1) having a wear indicator (5). The brake pad (1) has a first bore (20) opening out into the braking face (4) of the friction lining (2), a second bore (22) opening out into the first bore (20) and into the edge (23) of the lining, and a slot (24) which extends between the first bore (20), the second bore (22), the edge (23), and the braking face (4). The indicator (5) comprises a pellet (6) adapted to the first bore (20), a sleeve (14) slidably mounted on the conductors (12a, 12b) of the indicator (5) and urged against the pellet (6) by a resilient sheath (16) that bears against the connection terminal (15) of the indicator (5). The diameter of the sleeve (14) is substantially equal to the diameter of the second bore (22). The slot (24) serves to pass the conductor wires (12a, 12b) during installation of the indicator (5) on the brake pad (1), after the sleeve (14) has been moved away from the pellet (6).

    • A damping arrangement (25) for damping axial vibrations in a shaft suspended (optionally) by a magnetic bearing has a radially extending thrust face (24) mounted on the shaft and separated by a small face gap (29) from a housing (30) and through which gap a stream of gas is forced by way of a flow restrictor (31) at the entrance to the gap. The flow restrictor acts with thrust face (26) to define a gap entrance related to the axial position/displacement of the shaft. A chamber (33), defined downstream of the restrictor and having exhaust passage (35), opens at neck (34) to face the thrust face and the gas pressure therein exerts axial thrust on the shaft. Axial vibration of the shaft modulates gas supply to the face gap and the chamber is dimensioned to create a phase lead of 90 DEG for the instantaneous pressure therein and axial thrust on the shaft, thus damping the shaft vibrations causing its displacement.
