    • A surgical instrument (10) has a housing (12) which contains a motor (14) that drives a spindle (104). A tool bit (20) is attached to the motor by a holder (100) that includes a body with a first end portion connected to the spindle (104), a central portion having an aperture (105) through which a shaft of the tool bit (20) passes into the cavity (114). A pair of lock pawls (118) are pivotally mounted in the cavity (114) with each one having a first tab (126) that enters a slot (158) in the shaft when the lock pawls (118) are in a first position to hold the tool bit (20) in the instrument (10). The first tabs (126) retract from the slot (158) when the lock pawls (118) are in a second position for changing the tool bit (20). A ring (134) extends around the body and pivots the lock pawls (118) between the first and second positions, and a lever (138) is pivotally coupled to the housing to move the ring (134).

    • A device for connecting two non-coaxial rotating shafts (16, 24) comprises a first body (26) connected to one shaft (16) and a second body (26') connected to the other shaft (24). A link (18) extends between the two bodies (26, 26'). A first coupling mechanism (12) connects the first body (26) to the link (18) and includes a first pair of conical rollers (36, 38) rotatably attached to either the first body (26) or the link (18). The first coupling mechanism (12) also includes first tapered aperture (41) through the other one of the first body (26) and the link (18) with the first pair of rollers (36, 38) located in the first tapered aperture (41). A second coupling mechanism (20) connects the second body (26') to the link (18) and includes a second pair of conical rollers (36', 38') rotatably attached to either the second body (26') or link (18). The other one of the second body (26') and the link (18) has a second tapered aperture (42) in which the second pair of the rollers (36', 38') is located.

    • A bearing system is provided to couple a tool shaft (18) to a power driven surgical instrument (11) that has a support tube (12) with a longitudinally extending aperture for rotation of the tool shaft (18) about an axis. A pair of bearing assemblies (21 and 22) are spaced apart within the aperture by a sleeve (32) and a helical spring (30) that axially biases the bearing assemblies within the aperture. Each bearing assembly includes first and second bearings (26 and 28) and an interface cartridge (24). The first bearing has an outer race abutting a flange element in the aperture, and has an inner race. The tubular interface cartridge (24) engages the inner race and has spring elements (46, 47, 48 and 49) extending radially into a passage through the interface cartridge to engage the shaft.
