摘要： A system and method for enhancing data capacity in optical data communication are described. First data is modulated onto a first optical carrier to occupy a data frequency range. The first optical carrier includes a first side frequency separated from the frequency range of the data band. A first modulated carrier having a first polarization state is output. Second data is modulated onto a second optical carrier signal occupying the same data frequency range. The second optical carrier includes a second side frequency separated from tha data frequency range of the data band in a direction opposite from the first side frequency. A second modulated carrier having a first polarization state is output. The polarization state of the second modulated carrier is changed to a second polarization state orthogonal to the first polarization state and the first modulated carrier is combined with the second modulated carrier into a combined carrier. The combined carrier is optically transmitted to a receiver, in which the first data having the first polarization state is extracted from the second data having the second polarization state.

摘要： Optical transmitter/receivers (1, 250) for use in a DWDM systems are provided. Transmission of data signals in a quadrature-return-to-zero (QRZ) format achieves a data transmission rate equal to eight times a base data rate, i.e., 80 Gbps over a 100 GHz channel if the base data rate is 10 Gbps, with high non-linear performance by setting the polarization state of the data bands such that non-linear effects induced by PMD are reduced. Additionally, a transmitter (106) achieves a transmission data rate equal to 16 times the base data rate by sharpening the QRZ pulses and interleaving pulse-sharpened QRZ data signals in the time domain, further doubling the data rate. Using counterpropagation in the transmitter, carrier signals and data signals traverse the same length of fiber, reducing fringing effects in the transmitter.

摘要： An optical homodyne communication system and method in which a side carrier is transmitted along with data bands in an optical data signal, and upon reception, the side carrier is boosted (200), shifted (210) to the center of the data bands, and its polarization state is matched to the polarization state of the respective data bands to compensate for polarization mode dispersion during transmission. By shifting (210) a boosted side carrier to the center of the data bands, and by simultaneously compensating for the effects of polarization mode dispersion, the provided system and method simulate the advantages of homodyne reception using a local oscillator. The deleterious effects of chromatic dispersion on the data signals within the data bands are also compensated for by applying a corrective function to the data signals which precisely counteracts the effects of chromatic dispersion.

摘要： A controller (7) is disclosed for controlling the power supply to a laser (3) that is used in determining the motion of an object (8). The controller comprises a power source (2) that is arranged to supply power pulses (10, 11) to the laser (3) in response to a controller signal. The controller (7) controls the generation of pulses to those periods in which a reliable result can be obtained, by detecting the laser radiation that has interacted with pulses reflected from the object (8), in order to conserve power consumption. Further the power pulses (10, 11) comprise a heating component (9), which serves to stabilize the temperature of the laser (3) and therefore calibrate the laser (3) so that a known lasing wavelength is generated.

摘要： An optical input device (110), such as a computer mouse or the like, in which the so-called self-mixing effect in a diode laser is used to measure relative movement of the device (110) relative to a surface (120). A housing (112) contains an optical measuring module (114) comprising a laser (3) and detector (4). The housing (112) fully encloses the optical measuring module (114) and comprises a base plate (116) having a transparent window (124) through which the surface (120) is illuminated by the measuring beam (13) and radiation reflected by the surface (120) can return to the laser cavity. Because the housing (112) is fully enclosed, no ESD shielding is required and the device can be made liquid-tight.

摘要： A drive circuit (18) produces a drive signal for a pump (10) having a piezoelectric actuator (14), with the piezoelectric actuator (14) forming a part of the drive circuit (18) and serving to shape a waveform of the drive signal. The drive circuit (18) comprises a pulse generator (100) which generates pulses; a converter circuit (102) which receives the pulses and produces charge packets at a rate which equals a desired drive frequency; and, the piezoelectric actuator (14). The piezoelectric actuator (14) receives the charge packets and, by its capacitive nature, integrates the charge packets to shape the waveform of the drive signal. Preferably, the piezoelectric actuator (14) integrates the charge packets to yield a drive field that approximates a sine wave. In one non-limiting example embodiment, the pulse generator (100) comprises a microcontroller-based pulsed width modulator (PWM) circuit (116) and the converter circuit (102) comprises a flyback circuit.

摘要： The invention relates to an optical sensor module (1) for a measuring device. Said module comprises at least one optical sensor (2) including a diode laser (3) having a laser cavity for generating a measuring beam, the diode laser being attached to a substrate (12), converging means (5) (such as a lens). During measuring, such converging means (5) converges the measuring beam in an action plane and converges in the laser cavity the measuring beam radiation that has been back-scattered by an object to generate a self-mixing effect and means for measuring the self-mixing effect. According to an essential aspect of the invention, that the diode laser (3) is configured to emit laser radiation of a wavelength for which the substrate (12) being attached to the diode laser (3) is transparent.
