    • For wireless networks that transmit synchronization signals allowing user equipment to synchronize to cells within the network and transmit reference signals allowing user equipment to determine cell identities, a method and apparatus taught herein advantageously link the synchronization signal sequences to the reference signal sequences according to a defined mapping. The linkingsimplifies the cell search process by allowing user equipment to determine cell identities based on mapping detected synchronization signal sequences to the corresponding reference signal or to the corresponding subset of referencesignals in embodiments where there are more reference signal sequences than synchronization signal sequences. In at least one embodiment, the network is a 3G LTE network and at least the Primary Synchronization Signal(P-SyS) sequences are linked to the Downlink (DL) reference symbol sequences according to a defined mapping, thereby allowing to user equipment to determine cell identities from detected P-SySsequences.

    • A base station transmits signals on a frequency (f 1 ) in an active transmission interval (TI) having a starting time and being part of a transmission cycle (TC) including other active transmission intervals for other frequencies (f 0 , f 1 , f 2 , f 3 ) appearing in a predetermined discontinuous transmission scheme that specifies the relationship (Δ 1 , A 2 , A 3 ) between the starting times of the active transmission intervals of the frequencies of the set. The mobile station scans the set of frequencies during a scanning cycle (SC) corresponding to the transmission cycle (TC) and determines the frequencies at which the base stations transmit. The start of each scanning is made at a point in time that is specified for the corresponding frequency by the discontinuous transmission scheme and the scanning of one frequency involves ending scanning of this frequency at the end of a time range (TR) of pre-determined length if no signal is detected within this time range.

    • A sequence of received signals is identified, by a receiver of signals transmitted via a channel of a wireless communications system, as one of a number of known orthogonal sequences. The sequence of received signals is received (103); a modified sequence is calculated (105) by replacing some of the received signals by their complex conjugate values; the modified sequence is correlated (106) with each one of the number of known orthogonal sequences to obtain a correlation result for each of the known sequences; and the sequence of received signals is identified (107) as the known sequence having the largest correlation result. When some signals in the received sequence are complex conjugated before being correlated with the known sequences, the correlation sum will increase so that even in case of a considerable frequency error the correlation sum for the correct sequence will be sufficiently large to be distinguished from noise.

    • Receiver resources are allocated based on how subframes are allocated within in a frame between downlink and uplink transmissions and how often the receiver is expected to report feedback information associated with the downlink transmissions. Additional time is available for processing received data blocks if the feedback information derived from those blocks must be reported later than expected due to the unavailability of uplink subframes. According to one embodiment, received signals are processed by receiving transmission configuration information indicating how downlink and uplink subframes are allocated within a frame in the time domain. Based on the transmission configuration information, the receiver determines whether a delay that exceeds a feedback reporting interval assigned to the receiver will occur when reporting feedback information associated with the downlink subframes. Receiver resources are allocated based on whether a delay will occur when reporting the feedback information.
