    • The radiation characteristics of an antenna are made configurable including in the antenna (A) a plurality of radiating elements and associating to each of said radiating elements a respective chain for processing the signal in transmission and/or reception, comprising: - a module for weighting digital signals (34a, 34b, 34c, 34d; 36a, 36b, 36c, 36d) capable of applying to a digital signal at least a respective weighting coefficient, and -an antenna conversion set (16 to 26) interposed between the module for weighting digital signals and one of the radiating elements of the antenna, the antenna conversion set operating on a digital signal on the side of the signal weighting module and on an analogue signal on distributed on the processing chains associated to each radiating element of the antenna (A) propagates (in transmission and/or reception), while respective weight coefficients are applied to said digital signal weighting modules (34a, 34b, 34c, 34d; 36a, 36b, 36c, 36d). said weighting coefficients determine the radiation diagram of the antenna.

    • A method of performing digital beam forming on the radiation pattern of an array antenna (34) comprising a plurality of antenna elements (34a-34c), each antenna element being coupled to a signal processing chain, said method comprising a weighting phase in which at least a complex weight coefficient (W r , W i ) is applied to a digital signal in a corresponding signal processing chain, characterised in that said digital signal is an intermediate frequency digital signal (S IF ; S IF W ), and in that said weighting phase comprises the following steps: a) duplicating said digital signal into a first and a second digital signal; b) processing said first and second digital signals by: - multiplying (15, 17) said first and second digital signals respectively by a real (W r ) and an imaginary (W i ) part of said complex weight coefficient; - applying a Hilbert transform (14) to that signal which is multiplied by the imaginary part (W i ) of said complex weight coefficient; c) combining (18) said processed first and second digital signals into a weighted digital intermediate frequency signal (S IF; S IF W ) by subtracting said second signal from said first signal.
