    • Downlink and uplink communication resources to ensure network coverage and satisfy assigned cell traffic requirements in a cellular communication network are allocated by setting (102) a given balance of downlink and uplink communication resources while leaving a part of said downlink and uplink communication resources remaining to be allocated. Downlink cell radius and uplink cell radius values are then determined (103) which ensure network coverage with the resources as previously allocated. An effective cell radius is then selected (1041) as the smaller of the downlink cell radius and uplink cell radius and then a first check (1042) is made as to whether the effective cell radius selected satisfies the assigned cell traffic requirements. If that first check (1042) yields a negative result, the effective cell radius is updated (10425) by reducing the value thereof and repeating the previous step by using the reduced updated value. Once the first check (1042) yields a positive outcome, a further check (1044) may be made as whether the resources remaining to be allocated for downlink and uplink have a difference in excess of a given amount. If the further check (1044) yields a positive outcome, the whole procedure is repeated by setting (1046) an updated balance of downlink and uplink communication resources reducing tϊiat difference. Once the further check (1044) yields a negative outcome, the communication resources are finally allocated on the basis of the current balance.
