摘要： Systems for bone fracture repair are disclosed. One system includes a biocompatible putty that may be packed about a bone fracture to provide full loadbearing capabilities within days. The disclosed putties create an osteoconductive scaffold for bone regeneration and degrade over time to harmless resorbable byproducts. Fixation devices for contacting an endosteal wall of an intramedullary (IM) canal of a fractured bone are also disclosed. One such fixation device includes a woven elongated structure fabricated from resorbable polymer filaments. The woven elongated structure has resilient properties that allow the woven structure to be radially compressed and delivered to the IM canal using an insertion tube. When the insertion tube is removed, the woven structure expands towards its relaxed cross-sectional width to engage the endosteal wall. The woven elongated structure is impregnated with a resorbable polymer resin that cures in situ, or in the IM canal.

摘要： A medicament containment device (106) is provided containing a medicament (114) and is associated with an implant, such as an orthopaedic implant (102). The medicament containment device (106) can degrade upon exposure to energy, such as energy (112) from an energy source (110). The energy source (110) can be used outside the patient's body, but in proximity to the orthopaedic implant (102), to apply energy (112) to the medicament containment device (106). Upon exposure to the energy (112), the medicament containment device (106) can degrade and release the medicament (114) into the environment (100). The medicament (114) can kill and/or disrupt bacterial cells (108) or other infectious cells that form in proximity to the orthopaedic implant (102).

The oriented implantable, biodegradable device is formed from a homogeneous polymer blend comprising a polylactic acid in admixture, in an amount of not more than 10% by weight of the polymer blend, with an additive which both plasticises polymer draw and is a degradation accelerant. The polymer comprised within the blend may be a uniaxial, biaxial or triaxial orientation. Also disclosed is a composite thereof, processes for the preparation thereof, and The implantable biodegradable device may be used as a high strength trauma fixation device suitable for implantation into the human or animal body. As examples, the high strength trauma fixation device may take the form of plates, screws, pins, rods, anchors or scaffolds.
