At least one acoustic element (50) is coupled to the skin-application portion (40) and configured to be placed in acoustic contact with the skin, and configured to apply ultrasound energy to the skin. The apparatus (20) additionally comprises circuitry configured to generate a current responsive to motion of the skin-application portion (40); and a control unit (10), which is configured to receive the current, to determine, responsive thereto, whether the skin-application portion (40) is moving with respect to the skin, and to drive the acoustic element (50) to apply the ultrasound energy to the skin responsive to determining that the skin-application portion (40) is moving with respect to the skin. The housing includes at least first and second support structures (34), placed in contact with a surface of skin surrounding the portion of the skin, the first support structure having a first concave surface (153) and the second support structure having a second concave surface (153) that faces the first concave surface. The apparatus includes one or more first ultrasound transducers (160) coupled to the first support structure and one or more second ultrasound transducers coupled to the second support structure. The apparatus also includes a control unit which drives the first and second ultrasound transducers to induce an implosion wave in a target region of the skin. Other embodiments are also described.

摘要： A method for thermal monitoring of HIFU and other thermal treatments, utilizing electro-magnetic radiation signal detection or image processing. The images or detectors output signals show the attenuation at the target tissue, and changes in the attenuation level may be correlated to changes in the tissue temperature and condition during treatment and the subsequent cooling down period. Additionally, the point at which denaturation and coagulation of the tissue occurs can be determined. Analysis of the functional change in attenuation with time of treatment enables the accumulated tissue damage to be quantified. The advantage of this method is that it indicates the level of damage in the tissue directly, instead of displaying tissue temperatures only. The method provides a cost effective non-invasive method for thermal monitoring during ablation, as an alternative to MRI monitoring or to CT monitoring based on temperature determination.

The method comprises: (a) imaging a region containing the target tissue; (b) determining a focal region of a damaging radiation; (c) positioning the focal region onto the target tissue; and (d) damaging the target tissue by an effective amount of the damaging radiation. The determination of the focal region is by delivering to the region bursts of ultrasonic radiation from a plurality of directions and at a plurality of different frequencies, and passively scanning the region so as to receive from the region ultrasonic radiation having at least one frequency other than the plurality of different frequencies.
