    • The present invention relates to a video encoding device and an encoding method thereof, a video decoding device and a decoding method thereof, and a directional intra-prediction method to be used thereto. The video encoding device according to embodiments of the present invention comprises: a main mode search unit for searching a main mode for a present block of directional intra prediction modes; a sub mode search unit for searching a sub mode in which a direction of the main mode searched through the main mode search unit is tilted in a predetermined offset in clockwise and counterclockwise directions; a prediction block generation unit for generating a prediction block for the present block from peripheral blocks of the present block on the basis of the main mode searched through the main mode search unit and the sub mode searched through the sub mode search unit; a differentiator for calculating a difference between the present block and the prediction block; and an encoding unit for encoding the difference calculated through the differentiator. The present invention can enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the intra prediction and can minimize an increase of overhead in the video encoding.

    • Disclosed are an apparatus and method for encoding images, and an apparatus and method for decoding images. The image-encoding apparatus according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a target block dividing unit which divides a target block of an input image to be encoded into a plurality of sub-blocks in accordance with the positions of pixels; a key block encoding unit which selects a random key block, the size of which is larger than that of at least one pixel, from among the plurality of sub-blocks divided by the target block dividing unit, and performs intra-prediction or inter-prediction on the selected key block; and a non-key block encoding unit which designates the rest of the divided sub-blocks, except for the selected key block, as a non-key block, and performs intra-prediction on the designated non-key block using values of peripheral pixels of the key block decoded on the basis of the key block encoding unit, and values of peripheral pixels of the current block. According to the present invention, spatial redundancy in a block can be efficiently removed, even when the size of a basic block for encoding increases in a high-resolution image-encoding process.

    • The present invention relates to an image-encoding apparatus and method, a transform-encoding apparatus and method, an apparatus and method for generating a transform base, and an image-decoding apparatus and method used in same. The image-encoding apparatus according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: an intra-prediction error collecting unit which collects prediction errors of blocks having the same intra-prediction mode from among macro-blocks of a predetermined unit encoded prior to the encoding of the current macro-block; a transform base generating unit which generates transform bases for each intra-prediction mode on the basis of the prediction errors collected by the intra-prediction error collecting unit; an intra-prediction unit which predicts the value of the current pixel using the peripheral pixels existing around a target block in the current frame in accordance with a directional intra-prediction mode, and generates a prediction error using the difference between the current pixel value and the predicted pixel value; and a transform-encoding unit which transform-encodes the prediction error generated by the intra-prediction unit using the transform base generated by the transform base generating unit. According to the present invention, transform bases are adaptively generated in accordance with the variation in the characteristics of images, and intra-prediction errors are transform-encoded using the thus-generated transform bases, thus significantly improving intra-prediction encoding performance without adding any additional information, and remarkably improving the compression efficiency of a video compression apparatus or the quality of a restored image.

    • An embodiment of the present invention relates to a moving image encoding/decoding apparatus and method through distortion block-based secondary prediction, and a recording medium therefor, in which the prediction error is reduced by performing secondary prediction on the distortion blocks with reference to one of the distortion blocks. In particular, the method comprises: generating a primary prediction error signal based on an input signal and a predicted signal; performing adaptive DCT transform followed by first quantization on the primary prediction error signal; deciding whether secondary prediction is necessary, based on a distortion value of a signal that is obtained through inverse quantization followed by adaptive inverse DCT transform of the first quantization signal; generating at least one secondary prediction error signal for a corresponding block that needs the secondary prediction by referring to at least one representative block recorded in a lookup table, and then selecting one of the generated signals with a relatively low cost as an optimum, secondary prediction error signal; comparing a first cost of the primary prediction error signal with a second cost of the optimum, secondary prediction error signal; performing adaptive DCT transform followed by second quantization on the optimum, secondary prediction error signal, depending on the cost comparison result; and encoding the first quantized signal or the second quantized signal.
