    • Disclosed is a method and system for compressing and automatically expanding an expandable luggage case 2 comprising a ratchet mechanism 8 and a bungee cord 32, that is used to bias a locking mechanism, in the form of detents 54 that mate with teeth 44, in a locked position, and to bias a jack mechanism 14 for automatic expansion. The bungee cord 32 biases the ratchet compressor system 8 in an expanded state. Thus, automatic expansion is achieved, in a very easy to use manner. In addition to being operated while the luggage case 2 is open, the ratchet compressor 8 is also operable from the outside of the luggage case 2 once the luggage case 2 has been packed and closed. A user may then compress the luggage case 2 simply by applying pressure to the lid 24. The ratchet compressor system 8 therefore provides a zipper-less, automated method of expanding a luggage case 2 as well as compressing the luggage case 2 once the luggage case 2 has been closed.

    • Luggage cases that are sized and shaped to be carried on to the passenger compartment of a commercial airplane are called carry-on luggage cases. Cases small enough to fit below the passenger seat 28 immediately in front of the traveler must be very small and compact and generally interfere with comfortable placement of the passenger's feet during travel. The disclosed luggage case 2 includes a tapering reinforced portion 22 of the main packing door 18 on which a passenger may wish to place or rest his or her feet during travel. This main packing door 18 is constructed to bend and open to give access to a specially designed 45° slanting shelf area 12 where a bottled drink 16 or cosmetics can be easily accessed without removing the case 2 from its stowed position beneath the front passenger seat 28.

    • A wheeled upright luggage case is disclosed. The best embodiment of the case has wheels (50, 52) to allow the case to stand upright in a stable and balanced position without attendance by the user. The case has a wheel handle (40) to allow the user to push or pull the case across a supporting surface. The case may be pushed or pulled on either four wheels or two wheels. When four wheels are used, the full weight of the case and its contents are borne by the wheels, relieving the user from having to bear any of the weight of the luggage with the arm. The body of the case has a front (36) and back wall (34) with a specific range of tilt angles from the vertical. By tilting the body of the case toward the user, the design of the case improves the stability of the case while it is pushed across a supporting surface on four wheels. Various case body configurations and push handle arrangements are disclosed.

    • A flexible garment bag (10) of the type which can be hung or held vertically (Fig. 8) or which can be folded transversely midway between the ends and carried by a handle like a suitcase (Fig. 1). The front of the bag has an access panel (18) attached at the bottom by a fold (20) to allow it to be moved to open position. Detachable connections (26) allow the access panel (18) to be closed. When closed, a handle (12) on the outside of the access panel (18) allows the bag to be carried like a suitcase. Unlike other designs which put the handle on the back panel, this arrangement permits suits to be loaded in the usual way, but when the bag (10) is folded the suits are folded with the lapels up instead of down, thus limiting wrinkling. A rigid folding bar (80) in the back panel (36) of the bag facilitates folding of the bag and the hanging garments in the bag. In addition, corner pockets (28) are located near the clothes hangers to assist in holding the clothes in place, criss-cross straps (78) are provided for the same purpose, and straps (66) at the bottom of the bag hold long garments in place. Further, the bag hanging hook (38) extending from the top of the bag can be adjustably positioned to hold the bag in folded position.
