    • The proposal is for a circuit for operating an electric motor (11) containing a monitoring device (24) for detecting increased load on the electric motor (11). The monitoring device (24) compares a difference in rotation speed (ND) between a predetermined reference speed (NRef) and an actual speed signal (NActual) which is a measure of the rotation speed of the electric motor (11), and compares the speed difference (ND) with a predetermined limit. If the limit is exceeded, the monitoring device (24) issues an overload signal (25) which reduces the reference speed (NRef) or a correcting variable (SN) transmitted to a final stage (18) or sets it at zero. The device of the invention is especially suitable for use in a ventilator system in which the fan (22) cools the electric motor (11) and or the final stage (18) itself.

The circuit comprises a shunt resistor whose voltage drop is taken into account in order to detect current. According to the invention the shunt resistor (SH) is located in the free-wheeling circuit (4) in order to detect free-wheeling current (IF) which is taken as a measure for determining the load current (motor current IM). In another embodiment the shunt is series-connected with the load and the free-wheeling circuit is parallel to the series connection of load and shunt.
