    • The batteries of a probe (10) are replaced by a dummy battery (30) which is connected to a an external controller (44,45) by wires (32,134) leading from the dummy battery terminals (36,38). The external controller (44.45) supplies a constant voltage to the probe (10) and also sends messages to the probe consisting of pulses of higher voltage. A comparator circuit within the probe compares the voltage at the dummy battery terminals with a known reference and sets a logic level high or low, thus enabling a serial data stream to be communicated to a programmable device within the probe. The probe may respond by sending a message back to the external controller, for example by modulating the current drawn through the battery terminals, sending an optical signal or by other means.

    • A probe (10) has internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes, for example a variety of filter modes and turn off modes. A switch on the probe sends an input to a controller which is arranged to preset the mode in response to operation of the switch. The switch may be a push button (32) which is operated externally of the probe (10) by means of an actuator in the form of a plunger (34). The probe has a work-piece-contacting stylus (11) mounted on a seat from which it is deflectable. The stylus and the seat may comprise the switch. An indicator, eg an LED (44), indicates the mode in response to an output from the controller. The controller outputs a plurality of indications of different modes in a sequence and a mode is selected by operating the switch one the desired mode is indicated.

    • A probe for position determining apparatus such as a machine tool transmits optical measurement signals to a receiver module. The probe is battery powered and the battery powers light emitting diodes which transmit the optical measurement signals. The optical measurement signals comprise serially transmitted codewords which are generated by a universal synchronous / asynchronous receiver transmitter (USART). The output of the USART is combined with a pulse width modulator which has an output having the same form as the output of the USART but with reduced duration of each pulse, thus enhancing the life of the battery powering the light emitting diodes. The pulse width modulator may also be used to set the timing of the USART.
