摘要： A position sensing apparatus comprises a sensor (12) having a housing (18) supporting a stylus (20) engageable with a workpiece (16) to sense the position thereof. The housing (18) is secured to a spindle (10) of a machine tool. The housing (18) contains an electrical circuit (24) adapted to generate an ultrasonic signal when the stylus (20) engages the workpiece (16). The arrangement is such that the signal is transmitted to the spindle (10) wherefrom signal passes through a bearing (44) to a bearing housing (42). The signal is received by an ultrasonic receiver (45) secured to the outside of the bearing housing (42). The receiver (45) can be located in a relatively arbitrarily selected position remote from the sensor (12). The signal may be coded to avoid interference by stray ultrasonic echoes.

A sensor is provided for measuring the extent of displacement of the stylus member relative to the probe body from a rest position. The analogue probe further comprises a first compliant sealing member extending between the probe body and stylus member such that the sensor is contained within a chamber sealed from external contaminants. The analogue probe also has for a suppressor for suppressing movement of the stylus member away from its suspended rest position induced by changes in the chamber's internal pressure and/or changes in the analogue probe's operating environment.

摘要： A probe (10) for a machine tool has a switch (32) or other sensor for connecting its battery power supply in response to movement of the probe. In a preferred embodiment, the switch responds to rotation of the probe in the machine tool spindle. The switch (32) is responsive to linear accelerations, but is mounted in the probe so as to respond also to the rotation. A circuit is provided to discriminate between the rotation and linear movements.

摘要： The batteries of a probe (10) are replaced by a dummy battery (30) which is connected to a an external controller (44,45) by wires (32,134) leading from the dummy battery terminals (36,38). The external controller (44.45) supplies a constant voltage to the probe (10) and also sends messages to the probe consisting of pulses of higher voltage. A comparator circuit within the probe compares the voltage at the dummy battery terminals with a known reference and sets a logic level high or low, thus enabling a serial data stream to be communicated to a programmable device within the probe. The probe may respond by sending a message back to the external controller, for example by modulating the current drawn through the battery terminals, sending an optical signal or by other means.

摘要： A probe (10) has internal circuitry capable of operating in a plurality of different modes, for example a variety of filter modes and turn off modes. A switch on the probe sends an input to a controller which is arranged to preset the mode in response to operation of the switch. The switch may be a push button (32) which is operated externally of the probe (10) by means of an actuator in the form of a plunger (34). The probe has a work-piece-contacting stylus (11) mounted on a seat from which it is deflectable. The stylus and the seat may comprise the switch. An indicator, eg an LED (44), indicates the mode in response to an output from the controller. The controller outputs a plurality of indications of different modes in a sequence and a mode is selected by operating the switch one the desired mode is indicated.
