摘要： A telecommunicataion system for providing voice and visual data communications over a conventional telephone line (16, 26) between a voice response unit (VRU) (25) and a number of subscriber stations. The VRU (25) includes a processor (20), a voice card (28) for transmitting prerecorded voice messages, and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) (24) for data communications. Each subscriber station includes a processor (10), a modem, a display (15), a telephone (12), and a DCE (14). Both DCEs (14, 24) include a modem, a start signal generator for transmitting a start signal over the telephone line (16, 26) prior to transmission of data by the modem, a start signal detector, and a switch that automatically switches the DCE (14, 24) from voice mode to data mode after a start signal is received. The VRU processor (20) controls the voice card (28) and VRU DCE (24) to provide voice and data communications over the telephone line (16, 26) with the subscriber station in accordance with a preprogrammed script.

摘要： Existing voice telephone communications are augmented in a simple and understandable way by the addition of a "dumb" display terminal (14) at a subscriber's location (10). Text, graphics, and picture data can be transmitted in ASCII code or other protocol, over existing, standard telephone lines (52, 54) and displayed on the terminal (14). The "dumb" feature is due to the display terminal (14) having a voice/data selector that can automatically recognize digital data and switch from voice communication to data communication mode. Accordingly, this display terminal (14) is entirely self-contained and is controlled from a remote location (60), such as a telemarketing agents position, requiring nothing more from the subscriber than mere possession of the display terminal (14).

摘要： A telecommunication system provides voice and data communications over a conventional telephone line (16, 26) that can be dynamically switched from voice mode to any of a plurality of data modes (e.g., fax, modem, or VoiceView protocols) during a single conversation. Each station includes a telephone (12, 22) for voice communications and switching means (14, 24) for selectively connecting the telephone (12, 22) to the telephone line (16, 26) in voice mode and disconnecting the telephone (12, 22) while operating in one of the data modes. A modem (222) provides data communications over the telephone line (16, 26) in any of a plurality of data modes. Voice is the default mode of operation. Prior to switching into a data mode, the originating station first transmits a start signal over the telephone line (16, 26) that includes a mode signal indicating one of the data modes. If a station detects a start signal transmitted by a remote station, a controller (10, 20) directs the switching means (14, 24) and modem (222) to automatically switch from voice mode to the selected data mode in preparation for receiving data from the originating station. The stations also can query one another to exchange information on their respective capabilities.
