    • A hinge assembly 20 pivotally couples adjacent panels 14 together in an overhead sectional door 10. The panels 14 include stiles 38 between each lateral end of the panel 14 to which the hinge assemblies are attached. The hinge assembly 20 includes an upper hinge leaf 70 on an upper panel with a pair of spaced generally parallel flanges 90 which span the juncture between the upper and lower panels. The hinge assembly 20 also includes a lower hinge leaf 72 with a pair of flanges 90 projecting generally parallel to each other. The stile 38 includes a pair of spaced, parallel sidewalls and a notch, depression or recess 60 is on each sidewall. The recesses 60 provide a seat for the respective flanges 90 of the hinge leaves 70, 72 and clearance between the sidewall of the stile 38 and any adjacent components. A rivet or similar pivotal connector device is seated within the pivot axis holes 112 on each side of the hinge 20.

    • An overhead door (10) and associated mating panels (14) includes a number of hinges to pivotally couple adjacent overhead door panels (14). Each door panel (14) includes a back metal skin (36) presenting a back face. Each hinge (20) includes a lower hinge leaf (50) a pair of hinge legs projecting generally parallel to each other. The lower hinge leaf (50) is mounted to the lower panel and a backer plate (56) is mounted to the interior face of the back skin (36) of the lower panel and screws or bolts project through the lower hinge leaf (50), the skin (36) and into the backer plate (56) . Each hinge leg (58) on the lower hinge leaf (50) includes a hinge pin hole near a terminal end thereof for alignment with the hinge pin holes in an upper hinge leaf (40). The lower hinge leaf (50) has a tongue (72) projecting from an upper edge (74) of the mounting base (52). The tongue is formed into a hook­shaped arcuate projection and aids in the alignment, support and positioning of a hinge pin inserted through the aligned hinge pin holes in the upper and lower hinge leaves. A depression or pocket (80) is provided in the back skin (36) of the lower panel for each hinge assembly. The pocket provides a recess for the terminal ends of the hinge legs (58) of the upper and lower hinge leaves. The shape or contour of the wells of the pocket (80) provides a location or alignment benefit to the positioning of the lower hinge leaf.
