    • This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus related to an illumination system for a display device. In one aspect, the illumination system includes a light guide (902) having a view region (914), which directly overlies display elements of a display, and a ledge region (916) between the view region and a light source (904) that injects light into the light guide. The ledge region is coated with an at least partially non-transmissive layer (922). The layer can be at least partially absorptive and/or at least partially reflective. In some implementations, the layer can include microstructures configured to turn steep-angle light such that it is redirected across the light guide at a shallower angle. In some implementations, the boundary between the ledge region and the view region of the light guide can have a nonlinear shape.

    • This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for providing illumination by using a light guide to distribute light. In one aspect, the light guide includes a light turning film (128) over an optically transmissive supporting layer (129). In some implementations, the light turning film may be formed of a material deposited in the liquid state. In some implementations, the light turning film may be formed of a photodefinable material, which may be glass, such a spin-on glass, or may be a polymer. In some other implementations, the glass is not photodefinable. The light turning film may have indentations (131) that define light turning features and a protective layer may be formed over those indentations. The protective layer may also be formed of a glass material, such as spin-on glass. The light turning features in the light guide film may be configured to redirect light out of the light guide. In some implementations, the redirected light may be applied to illuminate a display.

    • This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatuses for illumination using illumination systems having a light guide (1000). A light source (1010) is configured to inject light into a light input edge (1030a) of the light guide. The light guide is configured to recirculate the injected light therein such that the light passes back and forth across the light guide one or more times. The light guide includes light-turning features (1040) that extract light out of the light guide. To promote light recirculation, the light-turning features have a per- pass light extraction efficiency of about 50% or less and one or more edges (1030b) of the light guide may be reflective. The light extracted out of the light guide by the light-turning features may be used to illuminate a display.
