    • In an embodiment, a multicast communication session is setup at an access network within a wireless communications system, whereby the access network transmits an announce message announcing a current multicast communication session to a given group of access terminals within an initial cluster of sectors. The access network receives a registration request for the current multicast communication session from an access terminal, and selectively loads a stored cluster of sectors that supported a previous multicast communication session to the given group. The access network then turns on a multicast flow for the current multicast communication session within each sector of the stored cluster. In another embodiment, a multicast communication session is terminated whereby the access network stories a formation of the engaged cluster at or near the termination of the current multicast communication session, which can then be used during setup of a subsequent multicast communication session.

    • In an embodiment, a proxy client is positioned within a local wireless network (e.g., a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)) and maintains a connection to an application server in a Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) that is separate from the local wireless network. The application server arbitrates group communication sessions between a plurality of user equipments (UEs). An Internet Protocol (IP) unicast connection is established between the proxy client and the application server. The proxy client associates with at least one of the UEs over the local wireless network, and notifies the application server of the association. The application server sends, to the proxy client, traffic associated with a group communication session to the associated UE(s). The proxy client re-transmits the received traffic via IP multicast over the wireless network.

    • An access network (AN) receives a call announcement (session announce) message for transmission to an access terminal (AT). The AN initiates, in response to the received call announcement message, a physical-layer (Ll) synchronization procedure for at least one channel between the AN and the AT, the physical-layer synchronization procedure associated with a transition of the access terminal to a dedicated channel state (CeIl-DCH). The AN performs the initiation by sending a message to the AT. In response to the message, the AT monitors a downlink channel for receipt of the call announcement message. The AN then transmits the call announcement message on the downlink channel to the access terminal, and the AT receives the call announcement message due to the monitoring. The call announcement message is transmitted either (i) before the physical layer synchronization procedure completes or (ii) before a transmission of a reconfiguration complete message indicating completion of dedicated channel state transition.

    • The application relates to group communications over multimedia broadcast-multicast services MBMS. E-MBMS services can be used to distribute multicast data to groups and could be useful in group com¬ munication systems. However, in conventional E-MBMS services, the time to establish a new flow is on the order of 10 seconds. This laten¬ cy is unacceptable for high performance group communication sys¬ tems, such as a push to talk system that requires less than 1 second from the call initiation from the originator to the granting of the floor to at least one group member. This problem is solved in that a multi¬ cast flow is pre-reserved for the media flow in such a way that it can be quickly established. Furthermore, another multicast flow, which is "always-on", is used as a sort of application layer paging flow in order to indicate activity on the media flow. The user equipment monitors the paging flow (Multicast flow#l) regarding activity of a group com¬ munication (Call Announcement) and upon receipt of a call announce message, switches to the corresponding media flow (Multicast flow #2).

The received message can be an uplink message received from the given UE itself (e.g., a measurement report, a cell update message), or can be a downlink message for transmission to the given UE (e.g., a call announcement message). The access network determines that the received message is associated with a communication session of a given type (e.g., a delay-sensitive communication session). The access network selects an uplink initial signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) target for the given UE based on the determination. The access network also starts a timer having a given expiration period based on the determination. The access network refrains from updating the uplink initial SIR target for the given UE at least until the timer expires.
