摘要： Methods and apparatus for storing, manipulating, retrieving, and forwarding state, e.g., context and other information, used to support communications sessions with one or more end nodes, e.g., mobile devices, are described. Various features are directed to a end node controlling the transfer of state from a first access node to a second access node during a handoff operation thereby eliminating any need for state transfer messages to be transmitted between the second access node and the first access node during handoff or the use of a core network node to support state transfer. As part of a handoff state information is obtained by an end node from the current access node in encrypted form and then communicated to the new access node to which the handoff operation is to be completed. The new access node, e.g., base station decrypts the state information and then uses it to support communications with the end node. While the information is communicated to and from the end node over wireless links, since it is encrypted by the first access node it is secure and can be trusted by the receiving, e.g., target, access node.

摘要： A mobile communications system that uses IP packets to transmit data between end nodes, such as a mobile devices, is described. Inorder to facilitate session establishment, maintenance,security,and handoff operations, access nodes through which end nodes communicate with one another include a session signaling server module and a mobility agent module. The session signaling server module may be implemented as a SIP server while the mobility agent module may be implemented using Mobil IP signaling. The mobility agent and SIP server within an access node are identified using a single shared identifier, IP address. The same security method and common secret may be used to provide security with a regard to both mobile IP messages and SIP messages. Sessions admission decisions and resource allocation for admitted sessions can also take place internally to the access node of this invention without needfor signaling to external elements.

摘要： Methods and apparatus for using end nodes, e.g., wireless terminals, to discover base stations and communicate information about discovered access nodes, e.g., base stations, to other access nodes in a system are described. As the wireless terminal roams in the system and new access nodes are encountered, one or more physically adjacent access nodes will be informed of the presence of the new access node as a result of communications with the wireless terminal. A message indicating an access node's inability to route a message to another access node which is known to a wireless terminal may trigger the wireless terminal to begin the process of updating access node routing and neighbor information.

A wireless terminal determines delay information corresponding to queued information that it intends to transmit. The delay information includes a maximum queuing delay indicting a maximum amount of time data to be transmitted has been waiting to be transmitted. The determined delay information is communicated to a base station in a control information report. Alternatives formats for the control information report are possible including a report type conveying only delay information and a report type conveying delay information and queue backlog count information jointly coded. A base station uses received delay information received from one or more wireless terminals to efficiently schedule uplink traffic channel segments.

摘要： Techniques for supporting fault tolerance in communications systems, are described. Different networks nodes may be critical to different end nodes. Faults failures and/or scheduled outages in various network nodes are detected and/or reported (706). Fault notification messages are communicated. End nodes receiving a fault notification message determine if the message indicates a disruption in a node that is critical to the end node receiving the message. If the indicated disruption is in a critical node, the end node takes action to ameliorate the effect of the reported condition (718). Fault notification messages indicating disruptions in nodes which are not critical to the end node receiving the fault notification message may be ignored once it is determined that the indicated disruption is in a node which is not critical to the end node receiving the message.

摘要： Group communications methods and apparatus are described. Multicast operation is supported with the transmission characteristics (1003, 1052), e.g., transmission power level, coding rate, and/or modulation method being selected to reliably communicate information to the end nodes (134, 136, 144, 146, 154, 156) in the group but not necessarily to all end nodes within the cell or sector (138, 148, 158). Thus resources can be conserved by matching transmission requirements with information on the requirements of one or more group members. The requirements for reliably reaching the end node with the worst channel conditions can, and in some embodiments is, used to determine the group transmission requirements. Power level and other transmission resource allocations can change in response to changes in group membership and/or conditions corresponding to existing group members.
