    • Apparatus (62) is described for focussing an optical beam. The apparatus includes an optical transmission component, such as a waveguide (56) having a first end (54), a first lens (58) for focussing light from the optical transmission component (56) to a remote probe volume (60) and focus adjustment means (66) for setting the range (R) of said remote probe volume (60) from the apparatus (62). The first lens (58) is spaced apart from the first end (54) of the optical waveguide (56) and the focus adjustment means (66) comprises one or more optical elements (70) and means for removably inserting any of said one or more optical elements (70) into the free-space optical path between the first end (54) of the optical waveguide (56) and the first lens (58). In this manner, the focus or range (R) of the device may be set as required. A laser radar (lidar) device for wind speed measurements that incorporates the focussing apparatus (62) is also described.

    • A measurement device, such as a laser radar (66), is described that comprises a transmitter portion for transmitting radiation to a remote probe volume, a receiver portion for detecting radiation returned from the remote probe volume and a processor for analysing the detected return radiation. The device is suitable for transmitting and receiving radiation through a window portion (54) having associated window cleaning apparatus (e.g. wiper 62) for cleaning said window portion (54) in response to a cleaning activation signal. The processor is arranged to generate a cleaning activation signal for activating window cleaning apparatus when the properties of said detected return radiation are indicative of a reduction in transmission through at least part of said window portion. In one embodiment, a conically scanned lidar (66) is described that generates a cleaning activation signal when the power of detected return radiation varies as a function of the angle of transmission of radiation from the device. Corresponding methods and a weatherproof laser device (50) are also described.

    • A coherent laser radar or lidar device (2; 20; 84; 90) for measuring wind speed is described that comprises a transmitter for transmitting a beam of light to a remote probe volume (6; 54), a receiver for detecting back-scattered light and an analyser for calculating wind velocity at the remote probe volume from the Doppler shift in frequency of the detected back-scattered light. The incorporation of a back scatter profiling means, such as ceilometer (82), is also described. A wind turbine (902) incorporating such a device (90) is also described.

    • A coherent laser radar device is described which comprises a laser source (11), and two or more transceivers (84). The two or more transceivers are optically connected to the laser source by optical fibre cables (42, 48, 82) that are routed through an optical routing means (80). A detection means (27) is also provided, and radiation received by the two or more transceivers (84) can also be optically coupled to the detection means (27) by optical fibre cables (82, 86, 90). The device allows multiple transceivers (84) to be located away from central unit (64) of the device.
