    • Described is a method and system of monitoring the health of a machine (10), while operating. In particular, the method of monitoring comprises capturing sound data of the machine (10), while in operation, and comparing this captured sound data to previously captured, known sounds using a sound pattern recognition technique, with the technique that is used preferably being one that utilizes a human speech pattern recognition algorithm. The method is performed using a dedicated monitoring system (25) that includes a sound recognition system (33) wherein sensor data, obtained from a suitable sensor means (30), is captured and employed for the purpose of determining the health of the machine (10), with the sensor data being processed via a data analyzer (34) that is included in the sound recognition system (33) and with the data analyzer (34) being programmable so as to include a sound pattern recognition algorithm, preferably a human speech recognition algorithm. By using the monitoring system (25), diagnostic and/or prognostic information about the machine's operation may then be determined based, at least in part, on such a comparison.
