    • An optical fiber connector for connecting the ends of two optical fibers has a connector body made of a highly elastic material. The connector body has end faces and a lateral outer surface. A fiber conduit extends along a longitudinal axis of the connector body. The conduit is adapted to receive one or more optical fibers. The connector includes a shouldered fiber slot extending longitudinally between end faces of the connector body. The shouldered slot has a narrow portion extending radially outwardly from the fiber conduit and a wide portion extending radially inwardly from the outer surface. The wide portion of the shouldered slot has inwardly facing surfaces upon which opposing lateral forces can be applied for causing the shouldered slot to expand for receiving the optical fibers. The lateral opposing forces can be applied orthogonally to a radial direction defined by the shouldered slot.

    • The present invention comprises a connector comprising shape memory material such as a shape memory alloy, an optical fiber conduit and an axial stress opening traversing the connector from the connector surface to the fiber conduit and along at least a portion of a longitudinal length of the connector. The fiber conduit is dimensioned for optical fibers and to secure two optical fibers in abutment alignment for light signal transmission from one fiber to the other, with minimal attenuation and for securing the fibers without crushing or other damage to the fibers. In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a method of bringing optical fibers in abutment connection for signal conduction using a connector as above, wherein a wedging force is applied to the stress opening, whereby the wedging force will induce separation of the side walls of the slot and expansion of the fiber conduit for insertion of optical fibers and their abutment connection and securing of the fibers in abutment connection, when the wedging force is removed. Alternatively, a force may be applied to either side of the stress opening to again expand the opening and fiber conduit for the purpose of placement of optical fibers within the fiber conduit. Removal of the force will allow retention of the fibers in abutment connection of the fibers. In a still further embodiment, the present invention relates to an apparatus which applies a wedging force to a stress opening for expansion of a fiber conduit and insertion of optical fibers and their retention, light transmission abutment and connection in a connector as above.

    • An elastically deformable holder has a holder body made of an elastically deformable material such as, for example, a shape memory alloy, that deforms elastically in response to an application of force. The holder also includes a fiber-receiving opening disposed within the holder body. The fiber-receiving opening defines a longitudinal slot extending through the body. The fiber-receiving opening is adapted to expand when force is applied to the holder body to thereby receive a fiber and then to contract when the force is released to thereby hold the fiber. The holder may be used to interface with either a plan emission/reception area or a side emission/reception area of a substrate (e.g. an integrated circuit or chip). The holder may include a deformation cavity to facilitate and then limit deformation of the body. The holder may include multiple fiber-receiving openings and even multiple substrate-receiving openings.

    • The present solution relates to a system and method of an optical connector assembly for interconnecting two optical fibers. The optical connector assembly has a splice with a fiber conduit for holding bare ends of the two optical fibers together. Additionally, the optical connector has two corresponding ferrules. The two corresponding ferrules are for securing optical fibers and for aligning the bare end of an optical fiber into the splice without catching an edge. The method includes compressing along the longitudinal axis a first ferrule against the splice to force a guiding member of the first ferrule into a first aperture of the splice, thus opening a conduit of the splice at the first aperture. Once the optic fiber is inserted, the method includes releasing the compression along the longitudinal axis of the first ferrule against the splice to allow the splice to apply radial retention forces on fibers. A sheath to form a connector body of the optical connector assembly interconnects the ferrules.

    • An optical female connector assembly for connecting optical fibers for use in optical communication systems. A method for connecting the optical fibers using the ferrule connector assembly and the use of a tool are also disclosed. The optical ferrule connector assembly maintains the two optical fibers in an end-to-end alignment, with a minimal air layer in between the ends, using clamps (3) and end cones (4), in order to allow the light signal to be transmitted from one optical fiber to the other optical fiber with the minimal attenuation and reflection losses. Furthermore, the optical ferrule connector assembly comprises longitudinal slots (6) to provide flexibility to the connector assembly, therefore, preventing the crushing of the optical fibers.
