    • A vibrating wet precipitator is designed to remove particulates from particulate-laden hot gas. The precipitator 10 includes an array 30 of vertical wet cords 26 stretched within a duct 12. The cords 26 are tuned to vibrate due to the gas flow by controlling key parameters such as gas flow, velocity, cord length and diameter so that particulate collection and heat transfer efficiency are maximized. The cords are part of sieves 24. A plurality of these sieves are arranged to define a plurality of gaps 28, through which the exhaust flows. The sieves 24 and thus the cords 26 are spaced so that a vortex from a first cord 26(a) affects an adjacent cord 26(b) and a subsequent cord 26(c). The particles are then absorbed in liquid, which can be passed through a heat exchanger, filtered and subsequently reused. Preferably the cord arrangement is designed to allow the cords to vibrate at high frequencies, typically 10 to 100 Hz, to maximize particulate collection.

    • Electrostatic precipitator electrodes are lightweight, thin metal plates and/or bidirectional composite ply sheets. Such lightweight sheets or plates are more efficiently cleaned, because the rapping force requirement is reduced relative to larger conventional electrodes. The mechanism to dislodge dust from the electrode is motion within the plane of the collection surface. A frame is mounted around the collection electrode having upper and lower support members at opposite electrode sides and first and second vertical support members at opposite electrode sides. The upper support member is displaced by application of a tensile force, thereby causing deformation of the electrode due to biaxial tensile stress. In one embodiment, a second tensile loader applies tensile force to a vertical support member.

    • A discharge electrode using carbon fibers, nanofibers and/or nanotubes to generate the corona discharge. The invention contemplates conductive fiber, such as carbon strands with or without a polymer matrix to form a composite, and a supporting configuration in which the strand is extended along or wrapped helically around a supporting rod that extends along the length of the electrode. A mechanical bias is applied to each strand to maintain tension on the strand. Preferably this includes coil springs extending between bushings mounted on the rod and moveable hemispherical supports slidably mounted on the rod that seat against the strand.
