    • The present invention relates to a method for developing a classifier for classifying the trophic state of surface water comprising the steps of: a. taking samples of surface water of different trophic states; b. determining the nucleotide sequence of 18S RNA of micro-organisms in said sample; c. selecting for those sequences that are unique for a specific trophic state. Further, the present invention relates to a method for classifying the trophic state of surface water comprising the steps of: a. taking a surface water sample; b. extracting the nucleotide sequence of the 18S RNA of the microorganisms in said sample; c. checking for the presence of one or more of the nucleotide sequences depicted in any of Tables 1 - 6 in the extracted nucleotide sequences of step b; d. classifying the sample on basis of the presence or absence of said sequences. Further, a kit comprising an array for hybridization forms part of the invention.
