    • A messaging system has messaging devices (1) and a "comprehensive messaging server"' ("CMS", 10). Each device (1 ) has a processor and memory for executing client applications ("clients'", 2), communicating via a protocol stack (3). The device (1) may be of any of a variety of types such as a portable computer, a mobile phone, a PDA, or a television / set top box for example. The CMS (10) is a central link between the devices (1) and back-end servers (20), Server A - Server G. Communication between the CMS (10) and the devices (1) is via a single protocol. The CMS (10) has functions (13) performing normalization of the protocols of the back-end servers (20) onto the single protocol. The CMS also provides combinatorial logic functions 14 which are executed upon the primitives of the back end servers (A to G), thus enabling additional aggregated primitives H to Z over the single protocol. The device 1 communication is via only one server, namely the CMS (10), using the single protocol. The fact that the device (1) exercises a single protocol and that the CMS 10 is involved is transparent to the back-end servers (20). Normalization of the various protocols employed by the back end servers enables any number of clients (2) to be executed on the messaging device (1) using the single protocol. Within each client (2) any one of the primitives of the back-end servers (20, A- G) may be utilized, or any combination of the primitives of the back-end servers (A-G) may be utilized.

    • A service system (1) comprises a service core (1(f)) and an interface (1(d)) for interfacing with instant messaging clients (10). The service core (1(f)) controls interfacing with an instant messaging client to provide an interactive service according to an application and involving routing of multimedia content to the client (10). The system (1) is modal, dynamically interacting with a client to provide a desired service in a current mode for a user, the mode being an application state and associated group of user interactions. A mode database manager 1(a) maintains a persistent record of the mode of a service for a user. The service core (1(f)) interfaces with the mode database manager (1(a)) to allow a mode to persist through at least two instant messaging sessions involving interaction. A directory manager (1(b)) manages registered instant messaging users, and the mode database manager (1(a)) maintains mode status only for registered users. The system also comprises a presence compositor (1(c)) for publishing modes of services as users of a presence network, and some users are avatars displayed on client display screens and representing modes. A mail store manager (1(e)) is instructed by the service core (1(f)) to perform messaging operations according to service mode changes.
