    • A voice processing system in a communication network performs an operation in relation to a call from an anonymous calling party to a called party in a home network associated with the system. The operation uses the identity of the anonymous calling party without revealing the identity to the called party. The operations may include allowing the called party to return a call to the anonymous calling party or to send a message to the anonymous calling party, or performing a task in response to future calls or messages from the anonymous calling party such as filtering, blocking, or diverting or requesting authorization for the calling party to call the anonymous called party on demand, hi one aspect, the system automatically generates a dummy number for the anonymous calling party and uses the dummy number to guarantee anonymity by including said dummy number in a notification message or an out-dial notification. The notification may be a missed call notification or an anonymous call notification to the called party, allowing the called party to instruct or perform an operation in relation to the anonymous call while guaranteeing anonymity.

    • Imminent (or already exceeded) expiry of a licence to use content such as a ringback tone is communicated by deliberately playing (9) modified content, such as by decreasing the quality of the original content. Quality of the content is gradually reduced during a grace period after T expiry (Fig. 1). The imminent expiry is communicated inherently in the content rather than in a separate notification, the content being modified (7) during the grace period in a manner to indicate imminent expiration. The automatic content modification has the effect of greatly reducing the number of content management messages transmitted in the network, reducing required bandwidth and network element processing operations. In audio content the player may remove frequency ranges by passing the content through a digital band pass filter.

    • A messaging system (1) has interfaces for receiving and for retrieving messages with content, and an interface for requesting message transcoding by an external platform (7). The system (1) dynamically selects if transcoding is required for a message and, if so, how to perform the transcoding. It determines if transcoding is required according to a determination of capabilities of the receiving device and the nature of the content. Advantageously, the system dynamically learns rules for making this determination, by automatically observing: messages sent from devices of the same type, and/or messages sent to the devices of the same type by trusted systems, and/or modifications performed by an external transcoder on an original message and the resulting transcoder output. A probing component automatically parses received messages to determine content type of a received message to determine the nature of the content.

    • A user directly accesses a stored voicemail message through an SMS and circuit switched voice channel. This has the benefits for the user to directly access a particular voice message stored in the network without the need to listen sequentially through some or all stored voicemail messages or having to listen to a generic operator greeting with the number of messages. The method is reliable because no additional digits are required outside of the standard E.164 numbering plan. The voicemail system sends a voicemail notification SMS containing the depositor's address as the sender address, and an access number in the body text. The access number allows direct access to the voicemail. Through the SMS auto-preview function in the mobile device's standard SMS inbox, a basic interactive voicemail experience is achieved because the device can directly retrieve the voicemail using the access number.

    • A message router comprises a message controller with service logic functions, and a state database. It receives and processes message segments, maintains state of single and concatenated messages, and applies services to the messages. A routing and discrimination engine accesses a selected state database among an associated database and distributed state databases. The controller operates in a transparent-relay mode in which a message is relayed to a network element and the response from the network element is returned directly to an originator. The relaying may be performed using SCCP relaying. The controller can operate in a transparent- proxy mode in which it generates a fresh message and sends it to a network element and receives the response from the network element, and in turn returns a response to the originator.

    • A messaging system has messaging devices (1) and a "comprehensive messaging server"' ("CMS", 10). Each device (1 ) has a processor and memory for executing client applications ("clients'", 2), communicating via a protocol stack (3). The device (1) may be of any of a variety of types such as a portable computer, a mobile phone, a PDA, or a television / set top box for example. The CMS (10) is a central link between the devices (1) and back-end servers (20), Server A - Server G. Communication between the CMS (10) and the devices (1) is via a single protocol. The CMS (10) has functions (13) performing normalization of the protocols of the back-end servers (20) onto the single protocol. The CMS also provides combinatorial logic functions 14 which are executed upon the primitives of the back end servers (A to G), thus enabling additional aggregated primitives H to Z over the single protocol. The device 1 communication is via only one server, namely the CMS (10), using the single protocol. The fact that the device (1) exercises a single protocol and that the CMS 10 is involved is transparent to the back-end servers (20). Normalization of the various protocols employed by the back end servers enables any number of clients (2) to be executed on the messaging device (1) using the single protocol. Within each client (2) any one of the primitives of the back-end servers (20, A- G) may be utilized, or any combination of the primitives of the back-end servers (A-G) may be utilized.

    • A messaging method is implemented by a system (1) in a mobile network (3) in which there are mobile devices (2) including devices A, B, C, D, and E. An originating device (A) sends a message addressed to multiple terminating devices (B, C, D). The system (1) receives the messages and correlates them and routes them to the terminating devices (B, C, D). The system (1) correlates the messages by grouping them according to originating device and sending time frame. The system (1) allocates a global title record address from a pool for the session. The system forwards the messages with an MT-FSM, in which the originating device information is included in the message body, and the recipient address is that of the specific terminating device. The system (1) transmits a confirmation message to the originating device.

    • The invention provides real time dynamic resource management to improve end-to-end QoS by mobile devices regularly updating a resource availability server (RAS) with resource update information. Examples of resource update information are device battery status, available memory, session bandwidth, delay, packet loss, and jitter, network element storage capacity, network element processing power. This information is made available by the RAS. In addition, the RAS generates and maintains predictive models and makes available predictive data from these models. Network elements and devices retrieve this information in the form of notifications from the RAS or by way of querying the RAS. The network elements and devices, based on these predictions, act to negotiate sessions to optimise QoS. In one embodiment the RAS is updated by only mobile devices subscribed to the operator which hosts the RAS. The update information is addressed to the RAS as a stand- alone entity. However, it is envisaged that the server may be hosted by multiple operators and may receive updates from devices subscribed to different operators. Also, it is envisaged that not only mobile devices but also network elements such as MMSCs may send update information.
