    • A liquid crystal moving picture projector (1) includes a liquid crystal imager (2) for creating characteristics of an image, and projection optics (3) for projecting images sequentially created by the imager, the imager including a liquid crystal material (4) capable of temporarily storing information at respective areas thereof to create image characteristics capable of being projected sequentially by the projection optics. The temporary storage may be a function of charge storage directly on liquid crystal material or by structural storage characteristics relying on bulk effect of smectic liquid crystal. A method of projecting plural images in sequence includes creating an image or characteristics of an image in a liquid crystal material, storing such image in such liquid crystal material, directing light at such liquid crystal material, projecting such image as a function of light transmitted through or scattered by such liquid crystal material, and creating a further image in such liquid crystal material for subsequent projection.

    • An image copying apparatus includes a copier (3) for copying an image and an imager (2) which forms charateristics of the (3) image. The imager includes a liquid crystal image forming and storing system (1) for forming in real time characteristics of an image in response to a prescribed input (4) and for temporarily storing those characteristics for a time adequate for the copier (3) to copy the same and a scanning device (42) to scan the image forming and storing device to apply the characteristics thereto. In one embodiment the liquid crystal (5) is operationally nematic liquid crystal (12) encapsulated or contained in a support medium (11) that has a capacitance characteristic, and the scanning device (42) includes a dynamic electrode which applies surface charge to selected areas (24, 25) of the encapsulated liquid crystal/support medium (5) affecting the liquid crystal structural alignment to create the image characteristics. A graphics copying method includes the steps of applying respective prescribed inputs to selected areas (24, 25) of a sheet-like liquid crystal material (5) to cause the liquid crystal material (12) to effect the transmission, scattering or absorption of incident light thereby to form characteristics of an image, and using a copying process copying the characteristics to form a copy of such image.

    • A liquid crystal color display (20) provides a transmitted light output of one or more colors, black, and/or white, as a function of incident light and controlled energization or not of respective optically serially positioned liquid crystal color layers (2, 3, 4) and/or multicolor composite liquid crystal color layer(s) in the display. Plural optically serially arranged volumes (21) of operationally nematic liquid crystal material (25) having different optical characteristics, e.g. being dyed with different pleochroic dyes (28), may be selectively aligned or not with respect to an electric field to determine optical output of the device in a subtractive color mode. Techniques for discriminating voltage and/or frequency enable a multicolor response using only a single pair of electrodes (45, 46, 47). Using cross over liquid crystal material having positive and negative dielectric anisotropy characteristics as a function of frequency of applied signal, multiplex driving of the liquid crystal display is facilitated.

    • A liquid crystal image forming projector includes a liquid crystal display (314) selectively operable for affecting light incident thereon (325) and an optical device (321, 322) for selectively projecting light affected or not affected by the liquid crystal display (Fig. 12). The liquid crystal display (314), for example, selectively transmits light (326) and at least one of scatters (328) and absorbs light, and the optical device includes a projection lens (321) for projecting light to form an image that is a function of selective operation of said liquid crystal display and a selecting device, such as a mask or aperture (322), for selecting the light from the liquid crystal display for projection to form such image. A method for projecting an image also is disclosed and includes directing incident light (319, 325) to a liquid crystal device (314) capable of affecting or not affecting such incident light, and selectively projecting light (321, 322) affected or not affected by such liquid crystal device to form an image (307). The projected light (304) may be colored, for example using a selectively operable liquid crystal filter and/or a liquid crystal display that colors light incident thereon (401)
