    • A polarisation independent optical switch comprises a light input (6), a diffractive and re-configurable liquid crystal device (8), a collimating lens (7) for distributing the input light over the liquid crystal device (8), a transform lens (9) receiving light from the liquid crystal device (8) and a light output (6), wherein no polarisers are present between the light input and output. The diffractive and re-configurable liquid crystal device (8) may be formed as a liquid crystal spatial light modulator configured as a binary phase computer generated hologram with the holograms required to form broadcast, individual or multicast switching being re-generated using an iterative algorithm and then being recalled on demand. In one embodiment the switch has a folded configuration and includes a reflector (10) so that the light input and output are both on the same side of the liquid crystal device (8).

    • A mutant herpesvirus that can be used as a recombinant virus vector comprises (a) a mutation such that the mutant virus has a reduced ability in comparison with a parent type to cause lysis of an infected cell, and (b) an inactivating mutation in a gene essential for the production of infectious virus. An example is a HSV1 mutant lacking the essential glycoprotein gH gene and having a mutation impairing the function of gene product VP16. A heterologous gene can be carried at the site of the inactivated essential gene, e.g. a gene suitable for administering gene therapy. The vector has an increased margin of safety over known herpesvirus vectors in respect of incidence of cytopathic effects and/or risk of reversion.

    • The invention relates to molecules which have an amino acid sequence derivable from part or all of the constant region of an immunoglobulin heavy chain. The constant regions are of a particular isotype and have one or more allotypic determinants. The amino acid sequence is substantially homologous to the amino acid sequence of the constant region. However, it has been altered so that it is without at least one of said allotypic determinants by making its sequence the site for an allotypic determinant identical to the amino acid sequence from the corresponding position in another equivalent immunoglobulin constant region of a different isotype. The invention provides synthetic immunoglobulins with reduced allotypic differences as compared to a given wild-type immunoglobulin.

    • This application concerns vaccinia vectors and it is based upon the discovery of three unobvious gene sequences in the viral genome. One or more of the gene sequences may be inactivated, or part of all of one or more of these gene sequences may be deleted from the viral genome to allow (i) greater attenuation of the virus and/or (ii) enhancement of immunogenicity of recombinant vaccinia virus; and/or (iii) further gene sequence insertion sites, so that more foreign DNA may be incorporated in the virus. Where however, the gene sequences are essential for viral replication, viral attenuation can still be effected by altering the gene product (e.g. by manipulation at gene level ), such that a protein function effecting pathogenicity is adversely affected, whilst keeping the protein functional for virus replication.

    • A navigation and/or tracking system has a base station (B) and a roving receiver (R) both of which are capable of receiving signals from a plurality of transmission sources (Tx1, Tx2). A link signal (W, W') is passed between the base station and the roving receiver to enable the relative location of the roving receiver to be determined. The apparatus enables the determination of the position of the roving receiver within a space (such as a tunnel T) shielded from receipt of signals from the transmission sources and has equipment (P, Q) for producing substitute signals, each being locked in phase with a signal from a respective one of the transmission sources. A curvilinear transmission element or elements (F, F', F''), extend within the shielded space (T) for generating fields in the shielded space. The equipment (P, Q) propagates at least two of the substitute signals in opposite directions along the curvilinear transmission element or elements for receipt by the roving receiver (R). Additional equipment (S) passes the link signal (W') between the roving receiver and the base station (B) within the shielded space.
