    • The invention relates to a hydraulic system, especially for motor vehicles, comprising a master cylinder provided with a housing and a piston arranged therein in an axially displaceable manner, defining a pressure chamber which is filled with a hydraulic liquid. When the master cylinder is actuated by means of a piston rod acting on the piston, the piston is displaced axially and as a result, the hydraulic fluid is impinged upon by pressure and at least one sealing means arranged between the housing and the piston. Said hydraulic system also comprises a slave cylinder and a pressure medium line which is connected thereto. The invention solves the problem of providing a hydraulic system comprising a master cylinder wherein sniffling, i.e. pressure compensation between the pressure chamber and the after-running system and ventilating system is possible in all working states. According to the invention, the sealing means is provided, on the side opposite the piston, with at least one groove extending essentially in an axial direction.
