    • The invention is a disposable, positive displacement piston pump (P), having a polycarbonate body (B), a piston (10), an inlet valve (22), and an outlet valve (24). The outlet valve (24) is connected to an exit chamber (28), which is separated from the exit valve (24) by an elastomeric membrane (18). The elastomeric membrane (18) encloses an accumulation chamber (16) which is filled with a fluid such as air under atmospheric pressure. Pulsations in outlet pressure caused by stroking of the piston (10) are dampened by the flexing action of the elastomeric membrane (18), compressing the fluid within the accumulator chamber (16). The throw out of the pump is pressure-dampened and is of sufficient pressure to flow through very low-profile angioplasty catheters (A) having perfusion lumens (42) extending therethrough. The combination of the pump (P) with a very low-profile balloon angioplasty catheter (A) allows access of the catheter to a constricted passage with the ability to pump a sufficient volume of blood through such a low-profile catheter during balloon inflations.

    • The present invention provides a catheter (10) with at least one lumen (22) therethrough, and a balloon (16) sealingly engaged in fluid communication with the lumen (22). The balloon (16) has a predetermined folding pattern with at least three collapsible grooves or depressions (20). Upon deflation, the grooves or depressions (20) automatically collapse inward, resulting in a folded configuration which can be twisted into a very low profile configuration. The catheter body (10) preferably is made of polyether ether ketone ("PEEK"), and the fluted balloon (16) preferably is made of polyvinylidine fluoride ("PVDF") and polyurethane.

    • A low-profile angioplasty catheter (14) is disclosed which is insertable through a guiding catheter (13). The angioplasty catheter has two balloons. The distal balloon (17) dilates the stenosis. The proximal balloon (16) is separately inflatable and selectively closes the annular passage (30) between the angioplasty catheter and the guiding catheter. The angioplasty catheter has a central lumen with a series of openings allowing fluid communication from the central lumen into the annular passage proximally of the balloon which seals the annular passage. While the first balloon (17) is inflated to dilate the stenosis, blood can be withdrawn from an arterial source through a lumen (11, 12) (or plurality thereof) in the guiding catheter and pumped into the annular passage (30) between the angioplasty catheter and the guiding catheter. The blood then passes through the openings (15) proximal to the proximal balloon (16) into the central lumen of the PTCA catheter and flows beyond the distal tip (18) of the angioplasty catheter to maintain circulation of the patient's blood at a point distal of the stenosis.

    • A balloon on a balloon catheter has two different rates of distensibility. It can be used to perform angioplasty by taking advantage of its high strength and relatively low distensibility up to a predetermined range of inflation pressures and still be used to set a stent by operating within a pressure range where there is a higher distensibility. The balloon can be a single material that is biaxially oriented less than fully, or a blend of materials similarly oriented. Strands of a more crystalline material may run longitudinally through a matrix of a less crystalline material, with the resulting balloon, when not fully biaxially oriented, exhibiting high burst strength and two different rates of distension at different applied inflation pressures.

    • An angioplasty catheter comprising an inner (10) and outer (12) tubular members, each having a proximal and distal segment. The distal segment (20) of the outer body member (12) is softer than the proximal segment (18) of the outer body member (12). Similarly, the distal segment (16) of the inner body member (10) is softer than the proximal segment (14) of the inner body member (10). The proximal segment of the inner body member is harder than the proximal segment of the outer body member. The distal segment (20) of the outer body member (12) is softer than the distal segment (16) of the inner body member (10). A balloon (26) spans the distal segments (16, 20) of the inner and outer body members, effectively closing off an annulus created between the nested inner and outer body members. The combination of hardnesses provides for sufficient body strength to allow pushability, combined with sufficient distal softness to avoid trauma to the arterial walls during insertion.

    • A stent delivery apparatus is disclosed comprising a movable inner tube (19) and a fixed outer tube (6) having corrugations or undulations (24) at its distal end. The undulations or corrugations (24) are stretched by movement of the inner tube (19), whereupon the stent (2) is placed over the relatively flattened undulations or corrugations (24). A solid structure or an open structure such as a coil can be used for this purpose. One large proximal undulation (24) is provided for preventing the stent (12) from sliding from the pre-determined location during the setting. Upon relative movement between the inner and outer tubes (19, 6) which can be a single longitudinal or twisting movement or a combination of such movements, the undulations (24) under the stent (2) are outwardly relaxed, forcing the stent (2) to expand toward the vascular wall. The relative movement is then reversed to retract the undulations (24) and the delivery device withdrawn. In an alternative embodiment, the undulations (24) are perforated to allow perfusion under and through the stent (2) from point external to the patient's body to a point distal of the placement of the stent (2) during the procedure of stent (2) expansion.
