    • An apparatus is arranged to perform contrast enhancement for one or more color images. The apparatus comprises an image source (101) which provides the color image having color values for image areas, where each image area may specifically correspond to a pixel. A contrast enhancement processor (103) performs contrast enhancement on the color image by modifying a luminance characteristic for at least some image areas in response to the color value for the image area. The contrast enhancement processor (103) may specifically generate compensated luminance values for pixels by normalizing luminance values relative to a nominal luminance value for the color of the pixels. A luminance contrast enhancement is then performed on the compensated luminance values. The approach may allow improved image quality and may in particular reduce introduction of unnatural shadowing effects due to color variations.

    • A method of gamut mapping maps an input image composed of pixels and having an input gamut (IG) defined by input RGB primaries (Ri, Gi, Bi) to a reproduction gamut (RG) defined by reproduction RGB primaries (Ro, Go, Bo). The reproduction gamut (RG) is narrower than the input gamut (IG). An input signal (RGBin) defined with respect to the input RGB primaries (Ri, Gi, Bi) is color transformed (1) into a transformed signal (RGBt) defined with respect to the reproduction RGB primaries (Ro, Go, Bo), whereby color information of the pixels (Pl, P2, P3) within the reproduction gamut (RG) is preserved. Scaling factors (SFi) indicating a distance between on the one hand pixels (Pl, P2, P3) of the transformed signal (RGBt) which are outside the reproduction gamut (RG), and on the other hand an edge of the reproduction gamut (RG) are determined (2). The scaling factors (SFi) of pixels (Pl, P2, P3) of the transformed signal (RGBt) are spatial low-pass filtered (3) to obtain filtered factors (FFi) for these pixels (Pl, P2, P3). Component signal values of the transformed signal (RGBt) of the pixels (Pl, P2, P3) are corrected (4) in response to the filtered factors (FFi) to obtain reproduction signal values (RGBo) which are input values (RGBi) moved towards inside the reproduction gamut (RG).

    • A multi-primary conversion (5) of input drive values (RGB) defines a color of a pixel (PI) of a multi-primary display(DP) in an M dimensional color space (XYZ) into N > M output drive values (di) in an N dimensional drive space. The N output drive values (di) drive N sub-pixels (SPi) of the pixel (PI). The color of the pixel (PI) in the color space (XYZ) is defined by linear combinations of N color primaries of the respective N sub-pixels (SPi). The multi-primary conversion(5) comprises: defining a constraint in the color space (XYZ) thereby causing in the color space (XYZ) a convex polytope (U0; L0; V50) defined by vertex points (V10, V11, V12; V20, V21; V50), wherein only colors in the color space (XYZ) belonging to the convex polytope fulfill the constraint, determining exemplary solutions of the output drive values (di) for at least a subset of the vertex points (V10, V11, V12; V20, V21; V50), and constructing the output drive values (di) fulfilling the constraint as a convex combination of the exemplary solutions.

    • A color mapping method maps an input image signal (IS) into an output image signal (OS) for a display (DD) with display pixels (Pi) having sub-pixels (RP, GP, BP, YP) with primary colors (RW, GW, BW, YW) defining a display color gamut (WG). A look-up table (1) comprises stored luminances (LU) of reflective spectra (RS) at different chromaticities (λO) within the display color gamut (WG). The reflective spectra (RS) are spectra of reflective objects (RO) having a substantial maximum reflectivity at the corresponding chromaticities (λO). The color mapping method comprises a gamut mapping (2), retrieving (3) a looked-up luminance (Yl), a factor determination (4), and adapting the mapped luminance (Ym; Y). The gamut mapping (2) maps the input image signal (IS) having input pixel colors defined by an input luminance (Y) and an input chromaticity (x, y) into a mapped image signal (MS) having corresponding mapped pixel colors defined by a mapped luminance (Ym; Y) and a mapped chromaticity (xm, ym). The input pixel colors lie within an input color gamut different than the display color gamut (WG). The looked-up luminance (Yl) is retrieved (3) by looking up the stored luminance (LU) in the look-up table (1) at the mapped chromaticity (xm, ym). The factor (F) is determined (4) from a difference between the looked-up luminance (Yl) and the mapped luminance (Ym; Y). The mapped luminance (Ym; Y) is adapted (5) by using the factor (F; G) to obtain an output luminance (Ys) nearer to the looked-up luminance (Yl) than the mapped luminance (Ym). The image output signal (OS) is defined by the mapped chromaticity (xm, ym) and the output luminance (Ys).
