The light-guide includes an out-coupling structure configured to condition and provide light to the display panel in a pre-determined polarization state. A light source may be included to provide collimated light to the light engine. The light-guide may be formed from an isotropic dielectric material. The out- coupling structure may include a birefringent material having a high index of refraction to light striking the out-coupling structure in one direction, and having an index of refraction matched to the light-guide for light striking the out-coupling structure in another direction. The display panel may be an LCOS display panel. The display panel may be arranged for reflective or transmissive operation.
