    • The present invention relates to a wheel grid assembly (25) and vehicle towing apparatus. The wheel grid assembly (25) includes a wheel boom (26) and a pair of lift arms (31A, 31B). Each lift arm (31A, 31B) consists of an extension arm segment (32) transversely fixed to the wheel boom (26), and an engaging arm segment (33) having a pivot point designed for pivotal mounting near the end of the extension arm segment (32), remote from the wheel boom (26). The engaging arm segment (33) is made up of an actuating arm segment (35) and a gripping arm segment (34) extending in different directions from the pivot point. A pair of linear actuators (41) are pivotally attached to the wheel boom (26), with each having a fixed arm segment (36) and movable arm segment (37). The fixed arm segment (36) of each linear actuator is relatively transversely attached to the wheel boom (26) and the movable arm segment (37) of each is pivotally attached to an over-center locking mechanism (40).

The present invention provides for rotation of the horizontal member (58) about a first and second pivot point. The first pivot point is where the lifters (70) attach to the horizontal member. The second pivot point is formed by attaching a forward end of the horizontal member to a tilt cylinder assembly including at least one lifter. The tilt cylinder assembly lifter provides for movement of the second pivot point. By providing two pivot points, the operator of the underlift assembly is allowed more flexibility in positioning.

    • The present invention relates to a wheel grid assembly and vehicle towing apparatus. The wheel grid assembly includes a wheel boom (26) and a pair of lift arms (31). A pair of linear actuators (41) rotate the engaging arm segments about their pivot points to engage the wheels of a vehicle to be towed. Each linear actuator is attached to a respective engaging arm segment through an over-center locking mechanism (40). The over-center locking mechanisms lock the engaging arm segments in wheel engaging positions without aid of force from the linear actuators. The wheel grid assembly of the present invention may be incorporated with an extensible main boom (21), and utilized with various configurations of tow vehicles.
