    • A multi-function feedback sense input in an electronic ballast control indicates a number of lamp faults on the basis of lamp parameters exceeding specified thresholds. An end of life detection is achieved by conditioning a lamp feedback with a DC offset to provide a simple threshold comparison to determine if the lamp exceeds specified operational boundaries. An open filament, absent lamp or broken cathode is detected on the same feedback sense by detecting an open circuit in the lamp filament and driving the sense feedback to a shutdown state in the event of a filament open circuit. The ballast control includes a current sense feedback for detecting overcurrent conditions as well as lamp faults so that the control detects an end of life condition, lamp absence, broken lamp, open filament, broken cathode, overcurrent, hardswitching or failure to ignite fault with a minimum number of feedback sensors. The ballast control provides a number of protections with a simplified circuit to reduce cost and improve functionality of the electronic ballast control.

    • A level-shift circuit for use with a half bridge in accordance with an embodiment of the present application includes an oscillator operable to provide a timing signal, a level-shift switch controlled by the timing signal of the oscillator, a high side control circuit operable to provide a high side control signal to a high side switch of the half bridge to control the high side switch and a low side control circuit operable to provide a low side control signal to a low side switch of the half bridge to control the low side switch. The level-shift switch is turned ON when the timing signal is high such that the level-shift switch connects the high side control circuit to ground and the high side control signal stays low to keep the high side switch OFF when the timing signal is high. The low side control circuit provides the low side control signal to turn the low side switch ON a predetermined period of time after the timing signal goes high.

    • The IRS21681 D (Figure 2) is a fully integrated, fully protected 600V ballast control IC designed to drive all types of fluorescent lamps. The IRS21681D (Figure 2) is based on the popular IR2166 control IC with additional improvements to increase ballast performance. PFC circuitry (Figure 19) operates in critical conduction mode and provides high PF, low THD and DC bus regulation. The IRS21681D (Figure 2) features include programmable preheat and run frequencies, programmable preheat time, programmable ignition ramp, programmable PFC over-current protection, and programmable end-of-life protection. Comprehensive protection features such as protection from failure of a lamp to strike, filament failures, end-of-life protection, DC bus under-voltage reset as well as an automatic restart function, have been included in the design. The IRS2168D (Figure 2) has, in addition, closed-loop half-bridge ignition current regulation and a novel fault counter. The IRS21681D, unlike the IRS2168D, ramps up during ignition and shuts down at the first over- current fault. The IRS21681D and IRS2168D are both available in either 16- pin PDfP or 16-pin narrow body SOIC packages.

    • A ballast control may include a digitally controlled oscillator to provide a precise and consistent oscillation frequency for switching a half-bridge circuit in the electronic ballast. The ballast control may include a digital memory device for storing ballast control operational parameters. A controller can access the digital memory to retrieve parameter values and apply them to various ballast control components. A counter in the ballast control counts a number of events, such as an over current event, and provides a signal when a predetermined count is reached to contribute to identifying fault conditions. The controller may contain one or more timers to time durations related to events in the electronic ballast, such as the initiation of an ignition current. The digital nature of the ballast control permits a wide degree of flexibility in providing operational set points and reacting to conditions in the electronic ballast and simplifies the ballast control.

The ZVMCS circuit senses an output voltage and/or current at the half-bridge circuit between said high side and low side power devices at a switching time of one of the power devices, and controls the drive signals so as to maintain the output voltage and/or current near or at zero at said switching time.
