    • This disclosure relates to polarizing optical fibers and polarization maintaining optical fibers, including active and/or passive implementations. At least one embodiment includes a polarizing (PZ) optical fiber. The fiber includes stress applying parts (SAPs) disposed in a first cladding region, the SAPs comprising a material with a thermal expansion coefficient, α SAP . A core region is at least partially surrounded by cladding features and the SAPs. The core includes a glass with a thermal expansion coefficient, α core. The arrangement of the SAPs satisfies the relations: R sc = d SAP /D sc, where D sc is the SAP center to core center distance, and d SAP is the average SAP diameter, and dα = lα SAP - α core l- In various embodiments, Rsc and dα are sufficiently large to induce stress birefringence into the core and to provide for a polarized output. Active fibers in which a portion of the fiber is doped may be implemented for application in fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers, and/or optical pulse compressors.

    • In a cold-shrink tube device, to permit a core member to be readily and correctly removed from an elastic tube member without deteriorating an attaching operability onto an object wherein the core member holds an end region of an elastic tube member in an elastically expanded condition. A hollow tubular body of the core member is torn into a ribbon shape along a weakened line formed spirally and continuously over an entire axial length of the body. A ribbon-shaped region defined in a spiral on the body by the weakened line includes a major ribbon section having an axial dimension larger than an axial dimension of an end ribbon section defined, adjacent to a tearing-start end, between the weakened line and one axial end of the body. When the core member is arranged in the end region of the elastic tube member, the ribbon-shaped region of the body with around three coils, including the end ribbon section and the major ribbon section, is accommodated inside the end region.

    • A liquid leakage sensor is used for a leakage detection system. The liquid leakage senor includes an electrically insulating linear core member, and a pair of conductive wires individually helically wound on the surface of the core member. The conductive wires are arranged on the surface of the core member separate from each other. The conductive wires function as an electrode of the liquid leakage sensor. At the time when the liquid leakage sensor detects no liquid, the conductive wires are electrically insulated from each other on the surface of the core member. The liquid leakage sensor senses the existence of liquid by detecting an electric current flowing in both the conductive wires via the liquid when the conductive wires are electrically bridged while the liquid is being interposed between both of the conductive wires.

[Solving Means] A slidingly detachable core member 12 includes a body section 22 that forms a hollow cylinder, and a sliding section 24 that is integrated with one axial end of the body section 22 and is so flexible as to be turned over to lie on the outer circumferential surface of the body section 22. The body section 22 consists of a plurality of plate-like portions 26 that are assembled to form the hollow cylinder. The sliding section 24 consists of a plurality of porous structural parts 28 that are formed adjacently to the plate-like portions 26 respectively. The core member 12 is incorporated in a seal region of an elastic tube member included in a cold contractile unit with the sliding section thereof turned over to lie on the outer circumferential surface of the body section 22. The core member 12 has pull tabs 30 that are integrated with the body section 22 while being isolated from the sliding section 24.
